It compares more to the Grand Cherokee. It lifts tires very easily off the ground; thus, you rely heavily on traction control...and its traction control is not as aggressive as 2010 4runner's A-TRAC system. I am not sure if they still offer a rear locker, but it was rare to find one when it first came out. From my research a few years back, the T-egg was a reliability nightmare for many folks. Skidplates are plastic i believe. Hard to find tires for the big rims. For the money, i think that i rather get other SUVs, like Land Rover LR4 (if reliability is of no concern), Lexus GX460 (if you want luxury), Jeep Grand Cherokee (if you want domestic and similar suspension design), or 4runners (my pick).

The Touareg "TDI" is an awesome car and probably the only other SUV I would buy on the market. The torque is nice and the interior is amazing.
They seem kind of pricey though and I don't know what car to really compare it too.
The gas mileage is better of course than the 4Runner and not to shabby as an off roader.
The only problem I have is with the engine. My understanding is that these modern diesels are very sensitive to the fuels put into the tank. U.S. diesel fuels aren't so good and if the motor detects any trace of unleaded fuel you will be seeing the service department. The injector system and emissions system is very complex in a TDI and does not like anything but diesel. I think the people are ready for diesel cars but the government needs to up the standards and control of the diesel fuel. They sell conditioners and so on to improve the quality but if you accidentally put in unleaded you are looking at $10k-$15k in repairs by just adding a gallon of the wrong fuel. Go onto the TDI forums, there is even some law suite going on with the TDI motors and quality of fuels.
As for the VW experience, as usual these cars out of warranty are very expensive and need a lot of specialty tools to reset or re calibrate the problems. If you are going to off road it I would sell it before the warranty ends.
As a long haul car I would stick with the 4Runner, the cost of gas to run it will off set the cost to keep the VW alive past 100k. OLD diesels are a different story or if we had more quality diesel fuels like in Europe then I would look at the TDI. Kind of a coin flip but there are many TDI's in Colorado.

well i own both a 2007 4runner and 2010 VW TDI.
my opinion would be that i would take the TDI any day over my 4runner. plus the airbag setup in the VW is amazing offroad and along with the differential settings on it make it possible to go just about anywhere. another plus would be the closer wheel base.
i would take my 4runner if i knew something would happen because everyone knows German parts are crazy, price wise.
although i wish i would have bought the 2008 v10 4.6 TDI rather than the v6 3.0 TDI just because of the power difference.

Shell with 45 cetane rating is what i find the best is, but that is hard to come by, BP has pretty good diesel as well.
I just didnt think the touareg was that good offroad? I don't forsee the repairs costing an arm and a leg as VW proves themselves time and time again that they know what they are doing with there diesel motors.

Give me a v6 tdi toureg with an air suspension and a rear locker and I'll gladly give up the Runner in a heartbeat. Wasn't the t-reg 4wheeler magazine's SUV of the year one year? I believe they are more off-road capable stock-for-stock than a 4runner. And a TDI makes them fuel efficient. And VW makes a nicer interior.
Of course, I don't think they are as reliable (they can't be) and the VW parts and labor are more expensive. Also, to get the t-reg I'd want, you're looking at a $40k car.... :moping:
