2011 4Runner sometimes won't go into park

Hello, I was hoping that anybody could get me some insight into this where to start looking.

My wife drives the 2011 4Runner as the kids hauler, and twice now she couldn't get it to go into park. She has to back up a bit and move forward a couple of times and then it will go into park.

Don't expect that with a 4Runner with 100k km (60k miles) on it.

Take it in. Should be under 5/60 drive train warranty.

Unfortunately just over 100k km, I think it is actually warrantied up to 80k km up here in canada. I am also just over 5 years...

I'm not sure as I have only worked on older toyotas but I had a similar issue that ended up being a neutral safety switch. Basically it's a switch that notes the position of the shifter.

If it is a defective gear selector switch i'm pretty sure you should be covered.
Otherwise toyota would be once again under the nhtsa loop like it was a few years ago with that infamous floormat case. FCA had a similar problem with their gear selectors and it had to be redesigned.

Forgot to mention......... Check for coins stuck in there.
That coin tray next to the shifter is a kids magnet for 2-3 yr olds.
I've had to get coins out of the shifter gate and a/c vents more
than once.
