2011 Ltd aftermarket alloys, backspacing and hub-centric rings

Howdy! I know there are other threads similar to this, but I can't seem to find a definitive answer re: new aftermarket alloys on stock 5th gens (Ltd in my case).

I bought Ion Alloy 179B's (17x8 +14 offset, 5.1" backspacing) for my winter rubber (265/70R17 X-ice2's) based on Canadian Tire's selector. Since then I noticed some discussions about rubbing above 5" back spacing, and there doesn't seem to be much room in the wells even for the narrower stock wheels. Just hoping to avoid problems before I get the wheels mounted...

On a separate issue, when my wheels came in they said the 106.8 to 108 rings (quite thin) weren't necessary. It's a small distance but a small misalignment could still cause vibrations, and would annoy the crap out of me! :ybrick: Are these really necessary?

Actually seems like a great idea for a chart of successful combinations of rims and tires (and lifts?) for each Gen/trim/lift, based on a poll of users. Maybe this already exists and I missed it? Thanks for any advice.

hub centering rings are NOT necessary if you properly mount and torque your wheels OFF THE GROUND - however be aware that the shear force is now on the lugs themselves rather than the hub - probably not the greatest idea, in general I would NEVER run wheels without hub centering rings...

Thanks. That was my gut feeling, despite the Canadian Tire guy telling me that I didn't need them. I'll order those rings and should be rolling vibration free, assuming I can avoid any rubbing on the wheel wells!

Any idea if the 5.1" back spacing will be okay?

5.1" backspacing should work but barely. If you offroad much or really flex the front suspension with the wheels cut the whole way you could get some rubbing on the sway bar and or the UCA. Normal street driving should be fine as long as you don't get a really wide tire.I have a set of 4th Gen Sport wheels that are about the same backspacing but I would run spacers on them if I wanted to offroad with them .They are just as set that I picked up cheap on CL to use as a spare since they have 285 BFG T/A KO's on them.

As far as the hub centric rings. If the wheels are 108mm hub bore that usually means they were made for a Toyota's 106mm or 106.6mm. The aftermarket wheel center caps are usually made to go from the inside out thru the bore hole and it makes up the other 2mm's and have an o-ring on them to get a tight fit and keeps them in place.

That's the way it was on both sets of American Racing wheels I had. On my Konigs I have now , the bore is 110mm and again the cap goes thru the bore before you put the wheel on and made of thicker steel with a o-ring to make up the 4mm.

All that being said,I don't use center caps and bought some 108-106mm and now 110-106mm hub centric spacers . They have them cheap on feebay......hub centric spacers

Are they really needed ? Who knows but I figure they help support the wheel on the hub as Toyota intended and take a little stress off the lug bolts. The wheels should still be balanced to the lugs.

If you use the center caps and the hub centric spacers it could cause a problem and not let the wheel seat down flush. Easy to check, take your center cap and see if it's a tight fit on the hub......if it is,you shouldn't use hub centric spacers.

Very thorough answer - that helps a lot. I've ordered the rings just in case the caps don't work that way or I decide not to use them. The new tires are 265/70 so theyre not very wide (still about an inch wider than the stock 20"). Fingers crossed for no rubbing. I'll get a good look at them on the rig before I drive them anywhere.

Thanks!

Hi hi,

I too bought a set of Ion Alloy style 179 rims. They have a 108mm bore diameter. I've found some 106.1-108mm rings online but question is are these worth installing? Mechanic at CT said they would be so thin they would likely crack and serve no purpose.

Thoughts anyone?

OP, are you still out there? Did you go with rings? Did they hold up?

Thanks

Hi Mike,

Sorry for not replying sooner. Starting up a new business is a real time-consumer.

That combo worked as good as I could have hoped. There's not much clearance, but no trimming of well liner at all, and no rubbing through the full range of steering and the fair bit of vertical articulation I saw on the stock suspension when bombing around in the snow off road. Never even hampered snow clearing from the treads that I saw, even with our wet sticky snow here in Newfoundland. And absolute night and day difference in traction. Not going back to studs for foreseeable future.

Now I'll stop blabbing and answer your question! The rings fit beautifully but I had to replace two of the rings after one year, so buy some extras. I'd be very nervous about highway speeds without them, but at least they're cheap.

Note that there may be two sizes of backspacing on those Ion Alloys. Hope you got the 5.1" as I did.

Good luck! Hope you're enjoying your runner as much as I am.

Jeff

Hey thanks for the reply Jeff. I ended up not installing the rings and the truck runs fine but maybe now I will... But yes, loving the Runner - got another 20 cm here in Ottawa and thoroughly enjoyed pushing through it. :)
