2013 FJ Summit - 5th Gen T4R

I just got my allotment from the airdrop today. Almost want to sell them to pay for some stuff on the truck but I don't want to take advantage of the program.
 
I just checked the Summit Website. FJSummit 2013 National Meet
As of tonight they posted that only 34 more vehicle spots left available.
If anybody else is planning on going ......If you wait much longer it might be full.

I also have one more room (apt.)available at the house I'm renting. FJ Summit house I will post it up on the FJ forumin a couple of days unless somebody here wants it and pm's me . C'mon 4Runner peeps of any Gen! Sorry.....Room is no longer available as a FJ forum guy jumped on it!

I'm signed up. Coming from Atlanta. Will probably go through St. Louis. Me and Mrs. Mick. Still looking at a place to stay.

I'm not happy with these trail selections, but this is what is assigned currently.

Thursday Trail Run: Poughkeepsie Gulch at 08:00 AM
Friday Trail Run: California/Corkscrew sponsored by Discount Tire at 09:00 AM
Saturday Trail Run: Poughkeepsie Gulch at 08:00 AM

Based on my initial reading of trail descriptions I wanted to do the Alpine loop. Not sure I wanted the first trail on Thurs Poughkeepsie to be the one listed as most difficult. :pray2:

The Thurs-Sat gatherings with seminars/guest speakers/dinners and the big Sat. Night raffle is a good place to mingle and meet people and alot of fun IMO.

I would register, as the first year I went I didn't register and really felt like an outsider. I was staying at a cabin 45 miles away though and just went into town to see the sponsor tent set ups and didn't hang out there like I did last year.

They have windshield stickers for the trucks and name tags so you stand out. Plus there was a big stink about people who weren't registered buying raffle tickets and supposedly now only registered peeps will be able to buy them according to this post .

I don't know if that will hold up as tickets sold/money talks in a raffle and it's a big one with alot of big prizes!

Keep checking back,you can change them as new ones are added.
To be honest,I haven't been on even one guided FJ trail run yet as last year I cancelled them and just ran trails with the other 4Runner guys .I did sign up for Poughkeepsie this year on Thurs and Fri as that's about the only trail of meaning that I hav'nt run yet and would like to see the best lines to run and my goal this year . My goal last was Black Bear as it was closed the year before.

Although I'll probably go up to Poughkeepsie Monday morning as last year I had problems with my rear tires hitting the fender wells at full stuff and the reason I didn't even try it last year.I did sit right seat with joneseyyy who went up with Limamike and a hail storm turned us back near the top!
I like the easier trails and exploring for the scenary and ride all of them too. The biggest problem last year was communication as cell phone coverage is spotty at best and cb range is so limited in the mountains.I just passed my HAM/Tech test to get my license last Sunday and have a Kenwood TM-V71A ham radio install to do in the next couple of weeks and is best for trails and getting a group together.

You can change your trails usually without issue once you get there. There are inevitably people who don't show-up for each run, and they don't really care (or didn't last year) if you tag along on a specific time/run. However, like [MENTION=8206]harper7[/MENTION] said, doing the actual scheduled trail runs isn't all that fun... we had WAY more fun on the "hey, let's go do this one" runs with just a small group.
[MENTION=8206]harper7[/MENTION] - what's the main reason you chose that Kenwood? I'll have one installed for the summit as well. Doing some shopping around now...
 
Ha, I've had my ham license for YEARS and have never got around to spending the coin for a radio. :wow2: Heck, it might even expire sometime soon.

This trip might be a reason to pick up a HT. I always meant to get a Yaesu HT like the VX-7 and then a mobile base like the 8900 for the truck.

Did you join QRZ to study for the test then?I'm studying for the General test now on there and taking it May 12th.

Kenwood TM-V71 :der: Just did a bunch of internet research really and I like the quality look of the Kenwood with back lit keys that the Yaesu 8900R didn't have and read alot of good reviews. Kenwood TMV71A Product Reviews

I just got done mounting the remote detachable control head to the top of my rear view mirror.The mic comes off the base on these Kenwoods which is mounted under the seat.I was going to install it in the sun glass holder but it blocked the top of the mirror and I actually use it almost daily for my sun glasses.

Checking the FCC data base daily for my call sign!:rockon:
I just tested last Sunday though and they said it could be up to 2 weeks.
 
Been doing some research on the area. Found this nicely done guide. I like it because it has pretty pictures. Guide This is old hat to all you experienced folks, but it's useful for us less experienced.
 
For those attending the Summit this year who have never been to the San Juans before, here is a great web site with trail reports, maps and many great photos. Plus, the guy who runs the web site has a bad a$$ 4th gen.

I AM REALLY STARTING TO GET PUMPED UP ABOUT THIS TRIP. LOOKING FORWARD TO SEEING ALL YOU GUYS AND RE-CONNECTING!!! Meeting some new faces too (Autorotate). Cant wait to get there. Clay, I will see you bright and early on the convoy. Are you leaving from Cabela's?
