Truckee Fire Update

The "Truckee Fire" as the news calls it, probably because it is mostly in the Truckee Range; bounded by Nixon, Wadsworth, Fernley, I-80, Winnemucca Lake and the Hot Springs Flat (so far) has burned about 80,000 acres (so far). Per the news it is about 35% contained.

It started on the 3rd and is still burning (on the 7th). I'll go out and take some photos of the area once it's all out in a couple days. This is some of my main stomping grounds so will cover it pretty thoroughly.

If you have a topo the fire is located between 38 deg 38' N and 40 deg N, and 119 deg W and 119 deg 20' W.

No smoke at all this morning so I headed out towards The Nightingale/Brady’s Exit to see what is going on. I was right; it seems as if the fire has been contained at Hot Springs Flat.

I took a few pictures along the highway and then turned off north on the track that leads nnw towards the Fireball Ridge. After running a couple of side tracks along the base of the mountain range I took the track that heads towards the pass over the north end of Fireball Ridge. It appears that the whole Truckee Range has burned From the highway north ( Tolbert Canyon, Nezelda, Two Tips, Juniper Peak, The North Valley, Black Warrior, I’m guessing all the way to Nightingale).

I talked to a couple of contract firefighters from Idaho. They said the the fire is 96% contained at about 104,000 acres. That means that it is in fact fully contained but the fire boss has crews walking the perimeter to make sure. A couple of very informative fellows. They advised me not to try to cross over to Winnemucca Lake as I would definatly be stopped.

BTW: No structures were destroyed in all that area except for a few old mine cabins.

I love that place: friendly courteous service, reasonable prices, everything done correctly:

Went in for routine oil and filter change; decided to check on having differentials and transfer case serviced Total was $263.41

Engine oil and filter = $74.23
Diffs and transfer case oil changed = $169.95

Total = $263.41

Of course that is all synthetic fluids, gaskets, etc. Plus they checked brakes steering and did a great wash (my truck is usually VERY dirty.

Based on comments on this forum I was expecting the diffs and xfr case to be twice that price.

BTW: the labor in those figures was $24.25 for the eng oil and fltr, $98.56 for diffs and xfr case.

Anyone in NW Nevada, Dolan is the place to go.

Trek 341 - Trinity Range

170715-Trinity/Jessup - July 15 Trek number 341 - 77th trek in the 4Runner

After all that brand new 0W20 and 75W90 in the engine, differentials and transfer box it’s time to swish them around. Plus the truck is happier covered in dust than being sparkling clean.

I drove down to exit 65, Bradys/Nightengale, same exit I used last week to tour the Truckee fire last week. This time I went North-East instead of North West up a little canyon into the Truckee Range. I drove along the crest from the Gold Ore Claims area to The Jessup and Superior Claims taking lot’s of side tracks with some wonderful views through the smoke. Finally came back to the highway at 76, White Plains. Eventually returning via 95 through Fallon.

The flood water from the Humboldt River have finally reached the White Plains so that is filling with water for the first time in about six years.

Trek 343 - July 27 2017 - The Other Simpson Pass

Well it turns out that there are two Simpson Passes; just a few miles apart. There is the relatively easy one going across a saddle between the Cocoon Mountains and the Bunejug Mountains which is even signed “Pony Express Trail”. I’ve been over that one several times following the Pony Express and the Overland Express trails across the state.

Yesterday I discovered a second more challenging trail. This one crosses the Bunjug Mountains north to south. On the USGS topo it is also called the Simpson Pass. It simply follows a dry creek bed up the north side of the mountain and then it follows another down the south side. Most of the way the ruts are deeper than my tires/wheels are tall so it was very slow going.

Once I rejoined the original Simpson Road east of Carson Lake I traveled north to US 50 near Grimes Point.

NAS Fallon. That's where the Navy "Top Gun" school is presently located.

Along with having carrier air wings training against agressor forces there are also several bombing ranges and electronic warfare ranges. Also Special Weapons guys training all over the place. I get to see some really strange off-roaders now and then.

Just rolled over 77,777 miles on the odometer

Toyo Open Country's now with about 37,000 miles on them; 1/4 inch of tread left = getting much noisier then when new at more than 1/2 inch.

The bushings on the front suspension are getting really squeeky - I guess I should investigate putting some kind of injectable lubricant in them. Anybody got any ideas? Something that doesn't retain sand and dust? My '04 LR Discovery with 130,000 miles on it didn't squeek as much - - just sayin.

To the guy in Danville asking about good treks in northern Nevada - I don't really know how to answer - I've lived in N. California and N. Nevada most of my 76 years -> for off-roading see some of my trek reports perhaps?

Lovelock-OJ-Willard Mine

Headed out to Lovelock yesterday. Wife mentioned she didn't think she had ever seen OJ's home at the Lovelock Correctional Center so we drove about six miles past Lovelock to Coal Canyon Road. Took a couple photos of the prison.

While in the neighborhood we drove up Coal Canyon a bit further and turned off to the north to the site of the Willard Mines. One old building and several pretty good sized open pit gold and silver mines. In the area a bunch of more recent antimony mines.
