2013 SR5 4x4 Update

Trek 353 - Rescue Semi and Bolivia Attempt

180126-Bolivia

Was originally going to be going with Bill and Reid. Reid bailed at last minute due to family obligations so it was just Bill and I. Bill is new next door neighbor driving a modified '94 4Runner Sr5 (body lift, modified front and rear bumpers, geared to 5.88, locked rear diff, big winch, bigger wheels and tires, etc.). He hasn’t seen anything of the terrain east of Fernley.

Started off with a top-off of fuel at Harmon Junction and then on to Sand Mountain where we stopped again. From there I took him past the naval bombing range and finally up to the top of the Sand Springs Range to get a dose of anti-fungal radiation at Project Shoal. Eventually we returned to highway 50 and finally turned north on Dixie Valley Road.

The plan was to run to the north end of the valley and try to explore Cottonwood Canyon up to Bolivia. I had heard that the canyon was pretty rough and that the trail might not go through. After that we were going to return and explore side areas like Eleven Mile Canyon, Coyote canyon, Hercules, Wonder, etc.

We found Cottonwood Canyon alright and the stories I’d heard about being a tough route were correct. Probably less than a mile in we were pretty much blocked. If we’d had quads it might have been do-able. We exited the canyon. I was looking at the map and noticed we could go on north and probably be able to come back to civilization at lovelock. So we headed that way.Navigation was a bit tricky. The north end of Dixie Valley has four very large ranches (hay) and unmarked gravel roads go every which way. Eventually we got to where the road heads toward Lovelock.

We stopped for lunch on the east side of McKinney Pass. Then began the climb up to the pass planning on visiting a couple of quicksilver mines beyond the pass. Pretty soon we were driving in soft snow with mud under it. We started down the west side of the pas and came upon a semi truck with a 53 foot trailer; stuck broadside across the road. Its emergency lights were flashing but didn’t look like anyone was around. At first I thought we would have to turn around but I found a way round the back of the trailer through the ditch and we got past it and stopped.

Upon further investigation we found the driver trying to get a couple of chains on the truck and get unstuck. He had an impossible task. I told him that we could take him to Lovelock and get a heavy duty tow truck at the truck stop. He wanted to try to get it out himself. All he managed to do was dig big holes in the mud, Finally nearing sunset I convinced him we were going to Lovelock. We got him there at about 5:30. Obviously we didn’t visit the Nevada Quicksilver or Pershing Quicksilver Mines.

Well I bit the bullet

After destroying the step on the right side of the truck on the rocks in the creek trying to get to Bolivia last week -> I bit the bullet and bought a set of RCI Off Road Rock Sliders.

This time I'll install both sides and put some real protection under the door sills - Most likely just trim the plastic sills (Antman Method).

Preparing for the RCI Rocksliders

I took the skirts off below the doors today in preparation for the RCI Rocksliders. Both sides took perhaps 40 minutes; then it was about an hour washing the packed dried sand/mud out.

I think perhaps I won't even trim the skirts - maybe just paint everything below the doors rustoleum black. Then paint the sliders a matching black. Everything actually looks pretty good this way.

Trek 354 - North of Nezelda - 18-02-18

Left the house at 8:00; cold and windy.

Drove out to Hot Springs Flat and then north west. After about four miles turned north east up into the south end of the Trinity Range.

Stopped a couple times to look around. Put it into 4Lo for a bit to run in some loose sand.

After a bit it was getting colder and the wind was gusting to about 35-40mph. This just isn't going to be fun.

So about two hours into it I headed home to beat the snow storm coming in.

Last photo coming down Farm Disttrict Road towards home.

Hoping for snow tonight, tomorrow and Tuesday. If so I'll be out in it.

Well we got about 3 inches over night - still snowing.

Trek 355 - 23 Feb 2018

180223 - Trek 355 - A Day in the Snow Beyond Black Butte

After several days of sliding around in the snow on town streets and state highways it was time to get the 4Runner back out in it’s element. I love the look of it without the skirts under the doors. Too bad I’ll have to put on the RCI Rock Sliders once they arrive.

RCI OFF-ROAD Rocksliders

Scheduled to arrive March 1st (Thursday). I ordered them not painted or powder coated. Now to see if Rust-Oleum will dry if sprayed on at less than 40 degrees!

Hmm - Looks like a trip to Vegas

I really don't like Vegas (Though I like the country between here and there).

My wife wants to go down next weekend but she doesn't drive in snow.

Forcast for rest of week:

Wed 43/31 snow
Thu 49/27 snow
Fri 34/23 snow
Sat 36/17 snow
Sun 39/18 snow
Mon 44/? ?

And since Tonopah is usually just as much snow as here - -

So looks like it's me driving - Yes I'll take pics.

Rci sider install

Really well built and welded up. The set weighs a bit over 100 pounds.

I bought them bare metal.

Got the garage up to about 50 degrees.

Painted them Rustoleum Black -> 1 rattle can. When weather better I may mask below the doors and paint them again'

Took about half hour to dry (because of the cold).

Took another two hours to bolt them in. Threads in the cars frame a bit tight (3 1/2 years of rust). A bit of WD40 and a lot of heavy wrenching.

Trek 356 - To Las Vegas and Return - Four Days

180308-Trek-356

5 Mar - Monday: left Fernley around 8:00am headed east on Us 50 via Fallon to Middlegate Station. Turned south onto NV 361. About 10 miles south was stopped for a while as a local cowboy and his daughter got about 200 head of catlle across the road in Gabbs wash. Passed through Gabbs and then on over Petrified Summit (6246 feet) and Calvada Summit (6254 feet). Still a few inches of snow alongside the road but the road was clear and not to icy.

Got to Luning and turned south onto US 95. Passed through Mina and on to Tonopah. A bit snowy and some ice at Tonopah (6280 feet). Stopped for breakfast and fuel. Continued on to Goldfield. Turned off and headed out to the Goldfield Cemetery. Still covered with snow.

Back on US 95 continued south through Beatty, Mercury, Indian Springs and eventually reched Las Vegas about 3:45.

6 March - Tuesday: Pat and her cousin wanted to do girl stuff; shopping mostly. I decided to head up Kyle Canyon Road to The Mount Charleston ski are and return on the Lee Canyon Road. There are quite a few pretty neat off-road trails in the Red Rock Canyon Natural Conservation Area. I spent most of the day on a lot of them. Being as it was a work day for the locals, all of the roads were mine alone.

7 March - Wednesday: Pats cousin invited us along on a raft trip down Black Canyon (the Colorado River as it continues below Hoover Dam). We were on a raft the carried about 30 tourists about 12 miles down to Willow Beach Arizona. The pilot pointed out all of the 1935 artifacts and history along the way. The bus ride from the Lake Mead Natural Recreation Area was about 35 minutes, the raft ride was about 3 hours 30 minutes and a bus ride back to where we started was 45 minutes. Very interesting trip.

8 March - Wednesday: Left Las Vegas at about 8:00am and returned the same route to Fernley as we had come down. Arrived back in Fernley at about 4:00pm.

Total driving miles in my car = 950 (we drove to Lake Mead on Tuesday in the cousins 2010 4Runner Sr5. Driving conditions for the 4 days and 950 miles: 12 to 63 degrees F, altitudes 1000 t0 8600 feet, windy on Monday, calm on Tuesday and Wednesday, very windy Thursday. Fuel economy total for the four days = 20.2 mpg.
