2014 4Runner w/ 1900mi, Check Engine + TRAC Off, Limp Mode

2014 4Runner w/ 1900mi, Check Engine + TRAC Off, Limp Mode - Code P1613

2014 4Runner SR5 4x4 w 1900mi, just 3 months old. Went to drive it today and the Check Engine and TRAC Off lights are on. Feels like limp mode with limited acceleration.

Took it to the dealership and they didnt have time to look at it today, so went by an auto parts store and plugged in an OBD scanner. Three identical codes P1613 Secondary Air Injection System Driver.

Anyone seen this?

Sounds like it is an ECM issue. It use to be the engine will only go into limp mode when there is a risk of failure. But thanks to CA, it now will shut down because of emissions is many cases.


Below is a description of what system causes the code you are getting.

MONITOR DESCRIPTION
After the cold engine starts and it is in the short time, the ECM transmits command signals to the Air Injection Control Driver (AID) to drive the air pump and Air Switching Valve (ASV). AID detects an open or short in the air pump and ASV circuit according to the AID terminal voltage and sends a signal as the diagnostic in- formation to the ECM.
If the Secondary Air Injection (AI) system circuit or the AID itself has a malfunction, the AID sends a malfunc- tion signal (duty signal) as a diagnostic signal to the ECM (when the system is normal, a system normal signal is sent). The ECM sets the DTC based on the diagnostic information from the AID.

Sounds like it is an ECM issue.

Thanks for the info. I'll post here after I get more details from the dealer tomorrow. This is the first real issue Ive had with a Toyota, ever.

Interesting code with such a new vehicle...

This is going to sound odd, but check your gas cap. Take it off and put it back on with the one "click".

Is/was the truck in "limp" mode the entire time or did it go away after restarting and just leave the "check engine" light on?

Looks like a I need just the light blue harness, mostly contained to the engine bay with a little bit of work inside the vehicle behind the kick panels and instrument cluster. Toyota p/n 82111-35Q10 MSRP $2,653.43.

Insurance is going to cover it, but I hope there's no long term issues.

Nice that insurance is covering it. Reminds me of a friend with a C32 AMG. Critter chewed up the wiring harness between the motor and firewall. Engine had to be removed to replace.....it was not cheap Darn squirrels!

Nice haha we have seen a few harness's chewed up before its the plastic toyota use's that they like for some damn reason, If insurance didnt cover it i'd just fix those wires and let it go.

My bet is a repair instead of replace would mean they'd deny warranty on any future electrical problems and blame it on that. If it was out of warranty I'd definitely go the repair route.

Agreed...the old me would of grabbed my butane soldering iron and some shrink tubes. But, if insurance is coving it go for it. Then spend some money on a pellet gun.

Wow, I was super ticked when I got rear ended with only 6500 miles on my truck (minor impact) but critters in the engine bay is way worse!
