2014 4Runner

Personally, I think there is good and bad with this re-fresh.

As always, people on this Forum (and others) will figure out ways to personalize and make cool improvements to the 2014 4Runner. It is a foregone conclusion that people will alter the front grill, black out the side view mirrors and so on....

I am looking forward to see what people come up with -- this is the fun part of owning this car and reading this Forum...

I believe Toyota certainly knows what its doing with its refresh. I believe, as others stated, they are trying to stand out. I need to see the SR5 as I would be interested if the front bumper will be colored the same color as the body or not. I think if so, it wouldn't be that bad...the silver is a turn off for me though...but again I didn't like my 2011 when I first got it either and its grown on me so who knows....can't wait to see one in person. Still want my V8 though...one can only hope

I agree, but I think the rear door fender trim will have to be replaced. It looks like it tapers-in like the TE. Altogether very promising though! I think it might even take a few hundred bucks off a TE conversion (assuming you don't mind keeping color-keyed flares).

Quentin, as you have experience with Softex--does Softex feel leather-like and not plasticy/"vinyl-ish"? In a TE, would you recommend the Softex over the Trail Edition cloth seats?

My experience with the current TE sets is limited. I liked the cloth sport SR5 seats but wanted the leather wrapped steering wheel, so I went leather. I don't think the softer feels vinyl ish. My wife's MINI has leatherette and the Prius Softex feels significantly better. The new IS350 F sport comes with Softex, actually. I like it. If you swing by your local dealer and check out an ES or Prius v Five, it will have Softex seats so you can check for yourself. I'm a fan.

The press release implied that the SR5 and TE get the same cloth seats in their base model configurations. I think the waterproof seats may be gone.

You can get away with not replacing the rear door piece, but it's not exactly the same. The SR-5/ Limited piece sticks out more and cuts off more abruptly, whereas the TE piece tapers off and tucks up against the body.

Anyway. I think we should be glad that toyota still has some idea of what is originality.

Since the turbo celica and supra disapeared, I find toyota to be so boring overall, I'm glad that they are coming back with more original looks, then maybe cool engines will come.

Luckily the Highlander carries the "I need a van, but I really want it to look like an SUV" torch.

I have high hopes for the 6th gen 4Runner due to the FJ's upcoming cancelation.

the outside doesn't really bother me since the inside is what most important while driving, for me at least. the biggest problem I had with my 2004 is the star hvac controls.

now with this 5th gen, my biggest issue is the buttons on top of the door. what idiot designed the most important buttons to be right smack in the rain or snow when you open window at a drive up window, etc.

after looking at this new one, I would buy this new 4runner and ditch my current Subaru legacy 3.6R if they got rid of the button placement.

they fixed everything I had minor issues with the previous gens. chrome, gone. black fenders, gone. decent grill opening, check. foglights, meh. dash, check. hvac controls, check.

don't like my .02, go find your own pennies

Thank you Quentin . . . hearing your experiences and advice is really helpful and reasuring as I really like the look of the Softex in the picture. I will definitely do as you suggest and check out the ES or Prius V Five--great idea. Now if they only follow through with this option for the Trail (and it is not a really significant added expense), for me (and my family) this will be one very special truck! Thanks again Quentin!

That's one of ugliest front ends I've seen on a vehicle.

As soon as I saw the new tail light I thought to myself that I would put them on my '13, since they look to be same shape, bolt-on.

But since these are new LED lights, my guess is that the wiring and/or plugs will be incompatible. :sad:

Thats about the only thing I like about the new 4runners is the instrument panel.

I tend to agree. I currently have a limited, so I have the optitron gauges. I do like that new center information display, and the fact that the displays are a more pleasing color. That was the one thing I couldn't take when I drove the SR5 was all that orange. I'm glad they are FINALLY doing a color change, blue looks a ton better imho. I do like the rear tails, the front end, well that looks like the 4runner smashed into a transformer. I will be very curious to see the actual production product. I'm also extremely OCD, I don't care for the Toyota logo not being centered in the grill.
