2014 4Runner

I'm looking to purchase a 2014 4Runner through Costco Auto. Has anyone used Costco Auto for purchasing? Any tips or is it as simple as signing up through the Costco Auto site and discussing with the dealer what options you would like and the set pricing already?

Thanks!

I have explored the Costco option but Costco deals tend to be okay only when you buy off the lot from a participating dealer. In other words, if you must have a TE Prem then you may not find the price all that appealing. I went solo after having explored Costco and other buying services, and ended up paying below invoice on a 14' TE Prem White.

I'm sure you can get a really good deal on a 2wd SR5 through Costco.

This is exactly my experience with Costco auto purchase program when I was going to the process of buying my 2014. It's the same way with Consumer Report purchase program. Since I am also a member of costco and Consumer Report they where the first once I tried. Their pricing is limited to what dealer have in stock. It's in the fine print when you get the discount certificate. I ended up getting a better deal by dealing with the dealers by myself directly, a lot more effort for sure but well worth the effort if you really want to save $$$$!!

Hello, new to the forums and 4runners, but been on other car forums. Came here to read up on the 2014 model, and am thankful for the wealth of information and community that exists over here. Threads such as Harper7's build thread have really educated me on the potential of this platform, and inspires me to create my own some day.

I prefer the interior upgrades and locking differential that comes with the LE package, but I really dislike the huge chrome accent at the front, and much prefer the TE's "bull dog" bumper exterior and the offroad wheels. Is there any potential for a TE conversion for the LE, similar to what many people have done for their Gen 5, but for the 2014? Maybe get the dealer to throw in the parts for the conversion.

I currently daily drive another car (profile picture) and would like to have an offroad-capable car to haul stuff and accompany me on outdoor adventures, so I hope to join the community as an owner.

Hi,
I think this idea transform LE to TE without KDSS is no good.:juggle: part-hybrid, however I dont understand why toyota does not able to select KDSS like option on LE.. Why Prado (LE build) have it, 4runner - not have :violin:

In SoCal, you should get a "good deal" without costco: http://www.toyota-4runner.org/5th-gen-t4rs/154274-how-much-people-paying-2014-4runner-out-door.html

The above thread gets a little pissy but if you read it through and apply the advice you will be golden.

Hi folks!!

Newbie here. Not new to Toyota, driving Tacoma's & 4Runners for a while. This looks like a great place with a plethora of information and ideas on these great trucks.

I have a question that is just burning me. I bought my wife a new 2014 4Runner SR5 Premium. Dark Blue.... :) Anyhow, I am alarmed by the recovery rate on the factory shocks. I took it to a dealer this afternoon, they of course racked it up and looked over everything. Then they drove it, compared it to others on their lot, and came back with the old "normal" thing. Sorry, but the recovery rate on these shocks is appalling. Damn thing bounces up and down four or five times before it can recover fully. Front end nose dives in braking, hard braking must be avoided altogether - hoping I never have to actually do that.

The thing just wobbles like a shrimp trawler. I took a look at the front end tonight for the hell of it over at my buddy's house. He's got two late model 4Runners in his garage and he's a master mechanic. He looked at the front end and noticed that the springs are larger than on his, but then again, the 2014 gains a hefty 1000 + lbs over the prior model. Our collective guess is that they stuck with the same stock shocks as previous models, and yes - the recovery rate is very alarming. Originally, even he thought I was over exaggerating the whole thing until he went for a ride. It is a high sitting SUV that has a lot of weight (over 6000 lbs) to haul around empty. He was surprised at the nose dive on braking and the 4.5 bounces counted before that thing stopped. Was even better at night - you could see the headlights bouncing up and down repeatedly well after stopped. Not the springs, they are quite large, has got to be the cheap shocks they threw on these to save a couple dollars on each unit.

Ok, question, is anyone else experiencing this? And if so, have you had any success at the dealership with shock replacement? Sorry, turning into a three question quiz...... A am interested in something like CaveTroll did as a fix, if this is what he experienced. I was already playing around at the Bilstein website looking for replacements. Found 24-187541 Front & 24-187558 Rear.

My thoughts are it's too damn new for Toyota to want to do anything about it until they get a few thousand complaints. There's no TSB on it, and there are not enough of them out on the road yet that may have been brought back in for this issue.

Any suggestions?

Thanks in advance.....

"Nose dive" during braking is unfortunately a well documented and normal occurrence on 5th gen models from the factory. This is probably tone of he largest complaint from new 5th gen owners. However, continues bouncing during recovery is not normal (at least on the 10-13 models; I haven't driven a '14 yet). Aftermarket shocks (Bilstein 5100's are a popular choice) do a good job reducing the nose dive, but do not eliminate it. New tires will also help to reduce nose dive and body roll, as the stock tires are marshmallows will extremely soft sidewalls. Many people have eliminated the nose dive with a lift kit, if you want to explore that route. But, many 5th gen drivers have been successful at adapting their driving style to control the level of nose dive in the vehicle during normal driving. Although disconcerting during panic stops, the nose dive hasn't been reported as an issue of control during such times. A forum search on "nose dive" will bring up several discussions on the subject, if you haven't already done it.

nose dive is a common complaint with the SR5. Trail has optional KDSS and LE has standard XREAS which both remedy the nose dive issue.

Thanks guys for the input. I noticed as well the new model gains about 1000lbs over the previous rendition as well. All things said, just looks like it's a set of better shocks for this puppy. The recovery is what I see as a problem, I'll keep pressing the Toyota dealer about the shock recovery time. In my day, this type of situation would warrant a new set of shocks. Shock recovery like I have on this vehicle is not what one would expect with a brand new one. Either they are defective from the factory or they are simply not the right type to use on this vehicle new from the factory. Who knows they could have gotten a bad batch. I'll keep trying..... :)

Is the first picture on philmont ave in NE?

I have to ask.... Why do you blur the license plate out in the pic?... I've see people do this a lot (not just you) and don't understand why...

it's not like you drive around with it blurred and that's in public and plain sight...

You never know who is stocking the internet ... It's different when you are driving around, people are focused on the road and not license plates.

If someone has a nice modded truck , they wouldn't want to be a sitting duck in their driveway.

My opinion anyway

The SR5 4WD is 4600lbs. The 4th gen was wayyyyy over 3600lbs.

Edit: 4WD SR5 was 4300lbs according to edmunds.

I have also never understood it. It's no different than seeing my car parked at the mall.

2014 trail running boards

I would like to get the factory trail running boards but the dealer can't seem to locate the part number or be able to order them. Has anyone been able to order these or know how I can get them?

Probably for the same reason people use nicknames instead of their real name on forums, one of the duck hunting forums that I'm on requires you to use your real name as condition to join. It's the most civil and well run forum that I read, as everyone knows everyone's real identity.
