It's a beautiful area, and one I'd recommend visiting, but it's frowned upon to show up unregistered. The event coordinators put a lot of effort into it, and have a difficult time getting permits for such an already large number of vehicles. The event registration is closed (sold out in less than 12 hours), and there is a wait list for those that didn't make it. There is talk of others gathering and hitting other trails in the vicinity though.

The Alpine Loop is a good starting trail. It is a full day of wheeling and is pretty easy to moderate.

Imogene is another excellent trail for a first timer and is pretty easy.

Most of the trails are not really difficult.

The trails I mentioned will get you hooked and bring you back again.

I'm in. Starting to get real excited as I run around getting everything ready! Going to Moab for a couple days first, and then over to Ouray for the Summit. Staying at a rental cottage in town. I've been scouring the books for trails that seem reasonable (for an offroad newb like myself) but still offer some cool scenery.

We did not get registered, but we are gonna be there all week in a 2010 4runner and a 07 fj. Is it possable to just jump on the end of one of the trail rides and just follow the group. Not sure how that would go. But none the less we will be hitting the trails.

For those asking about rolling without the group, I would say go for it. These areas are very well trafficked, especially that time of year. All the trails are pretty easy and can be run in a stock vehicle. (except Poughkeepsie Gulch, which is pretty gnarly)
I usually run all those roads solo and typically see quite a few people. Plus there is regular patrol of forest service and county officers.
If you're really worried about it, I would just leave early and run in front of the groups. That way you know there will be people a long if something should happen.
I am curious why it would be frowned upon to roll with the groups if you aren't registered for the event...they are public trails. There is no cost associated with driving on these roads as long as you have a legally registered vehicle other than an OHV sticker for motos and such.

The Forest Service gives the folks running the Summit unmitigated grief if they run across one of the groups with more people in the group than allowed under the permit issued to the Summit administrators for the event, irrespective of whether the extra vehicles are actually with the group or not.

I'm heading down unregistered and plan on doing Cinnamon Pass>California Gulch>Corkscrew Gulch>BlackBear>Imogene>Yankee Boy Basin.

If one wants to avoid large groups, is it suggested getting an early morning start, or late afternoon start?

Since some of the longer Summit runs start as early as 6:30, and all of them are gone by 10:00 or so, if you head out in the early afternoon you should avoid running into any of the groups.

Except for our massive delay last year behind the FJ Crew on Black Bear, directly followed by a remarkable delay by way of road construction.

We spent some time on the mountain today on foot. Heading out in my few hours to drive a couple trails. We stayed in Telluride for the last couple nights (hotel Telluride) we have stayed here before and for all the places I have stayed in the world...this place is the best.


Our cabin for the next 2 weeks does not have internet and I don't have phone service (thanks t-mobile) so I will be off the grid for the majority of this trip, I hope to catch a few of you on the trail.
