2014 Gasoline Smell

I've searched but I haven't found anything so forgive me if this has been answered.

I have a 2014 Trail with 20k miles on it. It was sitting in my garage for a week when yesterday afternoon I started smelling a strong gasoline smell in my breezeway. When I opened up the garage door it was overwhelming. It has to be the truck (I did process of elimination etc.) but I can't find any leaks.

Is this a common problem?

Did you happen to just fill it up? If so, did you pump any after it stopped on its own?

If you filled the truck up to the max pump clicks off. then put in a warm garage after a short drive from re filling then that would do it .. also it will kill you fuel vapor control system ..

No. I don't drive it much, I do fill it up every fuel stop but it was between 1/4 and 1/2 when I parked it for a week and then the smell happened.

I did fill it up the next day to see if maybe that would work...it still took a couple of days for the smell to go away.

I'm the only person who fills the tank. I never over fill it. I always stop after the click.

No. I don't drive it much, I do fill it up every fuel stop but it was between 1/4 and 1/2 when I parked it for a week and then the smell happened.

I did fill it up the next day to see if maybe that would work...it still took a couple of days for the smell to go away.

since you regularly fill it then short use, this can be a damaged fuel vapor system. I would stop filling it to the max. fill to the 3/4 mark. each 1/4 mark is 4.5 gallons when at 1/4 put in 9 gallons .

if your on a trip and then filling to the max is OK, because the fuel will rapidly drop as your on the road. it is amazing how much 20 gallons of gas can expand with a temp swing of 40-50 deg F..

My garage isn't heated, but it's parked in the garage all the time.

Lately we've been having typical New England temperature swings. I'll keep in mind not to fill it up if I'm going to park it immediately after.

The smell has gone away for now. I'll post if it come back, and what the dealer says (still under warranty).

I wouldn't be too worried if he's stopping after the first "click." Expansion is factored into the vehicle's fuel tank, even if he's driving short distances. The stated capacity of the tank includes a calculated vapor pocket for a full cold filled tank, so that it can expand without damaging the EVAP system. I think there's one or two members who erroneously filled their vehicles to the filler neck and were able to get like 23 gallons into the tank that way, so there's plenty of expansion room in there.

I mean it's not a bad suggestion I suppose, but I think it's a bit more paranoid/cautious than you need to be.

if the garage is connected/part of the home then you must be careful not to put too much fuel in the vehicle any vehicle.

on another vehicle I still have now 21 yrs old the gas did come out of the tank on my driveway. I did a normal fill nozzle clicked off, and did not over fill. the temp did a big swing like we get up here in new england . so since then 20 yrs ago , I use the fuel gauge to add the amount of gallons not the nozzle clicking off , when I do a short trip to the station.
