I'm in the same boat trying to identify a quality swap out with no issues down the road.
You should get a retrofit. It is better and safer (imo) than just dropping in HID conversion bulbs. Check out the link from Philsey and do some searching on here for retrofits other people have put in. It is surprisingly easy to do.
I am a little confused after doing some searching, so let me clarify.
I plan on installing an HID kit, which would include the bulb and ballasts (from VLED most likely). I was not intending on just shoving in a bulb and calling it a day. However, I am not sure if you are recommending I change out the actual projector and install a kit (bulb and ballasts) with something from retrofit or if you were simply saying to install an HID kit (bulb and ballast).
Long story short, even though the 2014 comes with projectors are you saying I need to replace the projector and install an HID kit
OR
do I simply need to install an HID kit (bulbs and ballasts)?

I think the retrofit is a good idea. Looks like it's a more dependable to go. It appears that the hardes part is choosing what style shroud to go with. There are many options to choose from. Also, I still haven't been able to figure out if the headlamp housings need to be taken apart.
Also, if anyone can confirm the fog light or the DRL light, that would be helpful
Sorry. I misread and did not see that you have a 2014 with the projector headlights. I was thinking you were going to drop in HID bulbs in the reflector housings... which is a bad idea. The projectors may be different, but I don't know.

I don't mean to be rude, but can't you just look in your owner's manual or look at the actual bulb that is installed on your 2014 model? Most of us here have not physically seen or touched a 2014 model yet, lol.

In addition, no one knows what beam pattern you'll get by just dropping HID bulbs into the stock projector housing.
Since you seem to have trouble locating things in your Owners Manual, perhaps the attached, extracted from the PDF's on this link, will help.

True, you'll be the first. Please take before/after pics, and learn how to properly aim your headlights.
I would recommend searching a few of the lighting-focused forums. You may not find the specific answer you're looking for with respect to a '14 4Runner, but you will likely discover all sorts of information on experiences others have had with dropping HIDs in a halogen projector.
To be honest, I didn't think the bulb specs would be listed in the manual and before I started unplugging the bulbs to look for a bulb number, I figured a quick post to a forum/community dedicated to the T4R might save me the unneeded hassle of such tedious work if someone had the answer at their finger tip.
I am shocked to see the number of folks lining up to lambast me for asking a simple question.

TRS has had some level of success with replacing the lens along with the HID pnp kit.

This would save some money on componentry, but personally I don't see the sense of opening up the headlight and not doing the real deal. My .02.

But, if you do plan to try to stick with the OE projectors you should take a look and see if they have this little cutout in them, that come built-in on some Toyota halogen projectors: HID info - Page 2 - Toyota Nation Forum : Toyota Car and Truck Forums
They call them the "squirrel spotters" (in case you want to search on this some more on the lighting forums), but basically it's so some light is reflected above the cutoff to light the road signs better. With OE halogen bulbs the glare is not a problem, but once you throw in PNP HIDs in there, it's a whole 'nother ball game. You will blind everyone

Generally, it's good to at least check the manual. Things like bulb size, fluids, wiper blade sizes... are going to be in there somewhere. It may not always be in a location that is easily found, but it will be there.
Lots of users register just to ask a question to save themselves the 2 minutes it would take to look for the answer. It adds up fast. I find responses to be much more positive to posts that are along the lines of "I tried this and I looked for an answer but I still need some advice..."
I just did a pnp kit in my stock projectors on a 2014 trail. The results were quite good with no noticeable squirrel spotters. I used XB35 H11 bulbs and fully potted Denso ballasts from TRS. FYI, the most recent batch of Morimoto ballasts have a problem with the ignitors in them. TRS has newly designed ballasts with larger ignitors on order and they are supposed to arrive December 10. So, either order a set of potted Denso ballasts (OEM) or wait until December 10 to get the newly designed Morimoto ballasts.
