Hey, I just got myself a 2014 Limited and thinking about retrotfit... What kind of ballasts did you use? Did you have to work on the wires or used something already h11 compatible?

i contacted lightwerx asking for a quote. They said they can't do it because of the side mounted h11 bublb we use.

I emailed TRS to see if they can offer any advice.

I did some research on the subject and the retrofit would be possible using the OEM HID projectors from either Toyota Venza or Lexus GS since they also use side-mounted bulb (D4S). The only problem apart from the actual retrofit, would be to find a ballast that would be plug-and-play, rather than splicing the wires... I have purchased a set of Venza projectors on eBay...

Hopefully, that helps the conversation a bit...

Hey Gpowdysocki,

Please let us know what you find on the projectors. I think the Ballast is pretty easy. You can get adapter harnesses made up from TRS to go from H11 to a relay to input of any ballast you choose (whether it be a TRS Morimoto one, or an expensive OEM version (potted of course)). The hard part would be finding which projector works best (HID OEM version) that can be somehow mounted to our light assemblies).

So I cross posted this over to HIDplanet to ask their experts.

2014+ Toyota 4runner - Halogen to HID Projector

To the poster that mentioned Lexus GS. Looks like he/she is on the right track. Question becomes the mounting of the GS projector. It doesn't sound like from the posts iLuXoR817 mentioned anything about cutting or grinding other than the HID projector shrouds to fit into the housing assembly.

Could this be a simple open up the lights, unbolt the stock Halogen projectors, take apart the halogen projector to get the brackets, and bolt up the Lexus GS projector, trim a shroud, and then reseal???? That would be amazing!

I have found out that the projector from the Lexus IS 350 is right on the money including the size of the unit. The only issue I have in my hand is to disable the DRL and tying them into the high beam function since they are Bi-xenon units.

I'm not so confident on making a side mounted bulb setup into a rear mounted bulb setup. i'm sure it could be done... But taking a smaller is probably less risky. Ideally if I could find a pair of 2014+ light assemblies so I could fiddle around with them for a while and not have the 4runner down that would be ideal.

I want to caution you guys about something regarding replacing side-mount projectors with rear-mount. (I'm not saying it won't work, just to check this first).

I know Gen5.0 and Gen5.1 headlights are different, but I suspect the framework behind the light was not changed.

Note how close my D2S projector plug (the red/black one) is to the white vertical frame piece. This is ~1/2 to 5/8", and getting the plug on/off is very nearly impossible.

I've got new headlights at TRS right now for LS460R retrofitting, and I totally forgot about how tight my present plug is. I hope I'm not in for a very expensive lesson.

As a practical matter, you almost have to do this. I was the first 5th Gen to RF, and it's just a bullet you have to bite. Remember tho, assuming you are successful, there will be another RF enthusiast that will in turn buy your takeout headlights.

Keep up the good work, good/proper HID RFs are da bomb.

The problem with the is350 units are they are hard to modify for a sharp cutoff and color. With the GS350/450 units, if you get ones with clear lenses they have a sharp and colorful cutoff stock

The IS projectors are bixenon and are 3" i believe. which will be a better fit for the '14 headlights. I opted for the GS projectors because i already had a set and I had bixenon on my previous vehicle and didn't really use it all that much. I was able to modify the GS projectors to get a decent cutoff, its not razor sharp by any means but my overall concern is the output. Ill try to get some cutoff and output pictures posted.

My whole entire setup is plug and play no splicing, I'm using Denso D4S ballast and bulbs. Wiring harness was purchased from TRS, the bulbs, ballast and ballast plugs was purchase from a separate online HID outfit retailer.

I wanted to enhance my lighting on the truck but maintain the OEM look. An average person can't even tell that a retrofit was performed on the truck even when with the hood opened. That was my main objective.

Thanks, iLuXoR817, for your response. The OEM look is what I am aiming for. I like the looks of the truck as it is now. For some reason other models such as Venza, or even Corolla, have modern lighting systems (LED or Xenon), and 4Runner does not. And so we are stuck with doing retrofits on our own...

Either way, good explanation and excellent job on your retrofit.

Yea i did "tune" the projectors I swapped out the lens with some clear lens, I forgot which one exactly but they were purchases from eBay. Their very similar to the S2000 lens, and they made a huge difference. I'll have to get a picture of the cutoff for ya. Keep in mind these projectors are not highly desired as the cutoff and over all performance leaves a lot to be desired. But we have very limited choices when it comes to side entry mounted bulbs versus rear mounted bulbs.

I also added 2 green spacers for a total of 3 between the projector lens and the front of the projector housing. 3 spacers was the optimal amount of spacing for my setup.

Keep the question coming get I'll do my best to answer them.

Any chance someone would know the part number and pricing for the left and right 2014+ 4runner headlight housings?

I want to this mod... I think I can do it all in one day (open, projector swap, wiring, then reseal, remount, reaim) but that is pushing it and I don't want my only family vehicle down and out of serice.

I highly recommend purchasing a set of headlights and not rushing it. It's took me a while to open the headlights because of the OEM sealant Toyota uses to seal the headlights, it's called permaseal and it's a PITA to open. Do a quick google search and you'll see what I'm talking about.

The cheapest place I found them was at Camelback Toyota in AZ. A set will cost ya about $480 shipped to your door.

damn... I'm reading about the permaseal... Did you use heat and pry method many times to separate the housing?
