2014 TEP in first snow....

i am currently waiting for my sr5 to arrive and can't wait, but must admit, a little worried about when/when NOT to run in 4Hi. This morning in Toronto there was a thin layer of very slippery snow, but also some dry patches along the way, should I be constantly be switching between 2 and 4 or just keep it in 4 for situations like these.

PS... also very worried about how to educate other family members on the use of part-time 4wd.

2WD would be just fine, and you'd be better off with proper tires. If traction control and the really irritating little buzzer that accompanies it are going off as you pull away from stoplights you could consider 4WD but really, it's Toronto; how much snow do you get? :wink2:

Like [MENTION=96008]Engineer[/MENTION] said, don't overthink it too much. If it's making funny sounds or getting hard to turn the steering wheel it shouldn't be in 4WD anymore. Other than that the only penalties of 4WD are marginally higher wear and fuel consumption. If you're not sure just leave it in 2WD until you actually need 4WD then shift back to 2WD as soon as you're done. That's the easiest way to minimize problems.

I've loved my trail so far in the Michigan snow. There is only about a foot and a half on the ground but we are supposed to get another foot tonight. I kind of view it as a challenge to see what the 4Runner can handle. Can't wait!
