2014 Trail Bad idea?

I was looking for some input on a whether or not this is a bad idea.
I have a 2012 SR5 navigation
toytec ultimate lift with radflo shocks
goodyear duratrac 285's
20k miles
I was looking at a 2015 trail premium kdss.
Dealer offered me this

35865.00
trade value 29000
then the doc and title fees are about 970.00
Should I just keep my runner?
I think it would be nice to get the kdss and the rear locker out of it. But I'm not sure if it warrants the otherwise incremental upgrades as far as the exterior/interior.

are you going to pull the lift and wheels/tires?

I don't know if it's a good deal overall, but I can tell you I paid 37.4k OTD for my 2014 Trail Edition Premium with KDSS and rear sliding cargo deck. This was on Memorial Day weekend this year and in Southern CA so prices will probably differ a little bit.

Good luck!

I was in for the last oil change and they pulled me aside to show me a super wamo dyne 2015. The ARB bumper isn't a bad idea. I was thinking of ordering a shockworks front bumper but the wait is so damn long.

He isn't talking about an ARB bumper but an ARB rear locker.

I think I would just leave the lift and tires on. I know that as we do stuff to our 4runners you can't expect to get much in return, but I felt like they were going a little on the cheap side with the trade in offer.
If you do decide to trade in and they would give you the same price or more for a stock 4runner I'd pay to have my stock parts/tires with super low miles swapped on plus some cash :biggrin2:

Don't do it keep your truck. Like others said put an ARB in the rear (hell put it in the front too), then take the sway bars off and you got a better rig then a stock trail (in my opinion).

Oops I'm a dummy. thx for clearing that up. I guess I oughta start researching the ARB lockers.

Have you driven the TRAIL with KDSS? You are correct to assume it handles way better than a stock SR5, but once you add decent shocks and springs to a non KDSS vehicle, the lines start to blur.

You're looking at $8315.00 out of your pocket if you do this deal (I assumed 7% tax rate on the difference in new vs trade - could be different in your area) with the fees you mentioned. That's a substantial chunk of change. I'd assume if you are "needing" a locker, you are going to be wheeling this vehicle, so you'd need decent tires and a lift on the new TRAIL as well. Assume $1000 for tires and another $800 or so for cheapest lift/shocks/alignment. We're up to $10k+ so far.... This does not sound like a good idea :)

I don't know long term goals with your 4Runner, but remember some of the long travel guys are actually REMOVING their KDSS to get more lift and travel.

I'll be the lone nay sayer. Go for it. $6-7k for a new truck upgrade. Cost you few hundred a month (6500/24=270) to own the 2012 - you win. Have them move all mods and tires to the new rig and you win big! Bask in the glory of toyota resale value.

I would not do it, but that is just me. Totally depends on your long term goals for the truck... If you want to keep it close to stock then the trail is the best truck to start with. If you want the most capable offroad machine, put the money into what you already have. If resale is part of your goals, go with the trail and don't mod it much (and wheel it very carefully).

From a hardcore offroad perspective. The KDSS will limit you in the long run and you will simply want to remove the sway bars (or build true swaybar disconnects). Not that it won't be plenty capable with the KDSS. Just that its an oddball technology that you won't see lasting on highly modified rigs. It's great for keeping it close to stock.

Another opinion I have is that the 4 runner really needs to be re-geared once you armor it up with bumpers, skids, and sliders. + larger tires... at that point putting in air lockers is only a little bit more money. So already having an e-locker in the rear is not much savings. Plus, just have a rear locker gets you in more trouble in the rocks (well maybe not with atrac also engaged). It is great for sand and mud. Having both front and rear diff lockable is the way to go.

Agreed. Love my 2014.

I've started to do mods to my current 4runner with the idea of when it got a little older, I could be a little more aggressive in my wheeling. I think I just got caught up in the shiny new toy idea for a minute. Thanks for the input guys. I think I'll keep my current rig and start saving up for the next mod.

Im in the market for a TE Premium where did you buy yours at? That's a pretty good price.

Has anyone had a chance to drive one of the KDSS equipped TE aggressively off road if so how do they handle in rough desert/slow crawl conditions? Can you install a 3 in lift on the KDSS?
