2014 Trail - Silver bumper accent removed

Spent today figuring out how to take off the silver bumper piece. Good news is there is no adhesive or screws, it is all just clips. Bad news is it is a very tight fit...that's what she said.

The piece is held on by 13 clips that are accessible from the back of the bumper:

The black plastic cover over the radiator needs to be removed. Nothing else needs removed.

Clips are removed by compressing the tab on one side and pulling them out from the other end.

Here you can see the location of all 13 clips:

The bottom clips are accessed from underneath the truck. I found that loosening a couple of the bolts holding the bumper made it easier to get my hand in to compress the clips.

Finding someone with long skinny arms will make this much easier. I have lots of scrapes and cuts on my arms.

May have been easier to remove the bumper cover. It's easy to remove on the 10-13, don't know about the 14 though. Gonna look cool black.
 
Brain fart moment. Guess it would be kinda hard to make plastic carry an electrical charge!

Spent a couple hours trying to get the back one off. Gave up. Whole rear bumper definitely has to come off for that piece. All my searching I can't find 5th gen instructions for removing it.

If plasti dip is the route you're going no need to remove it. Check out some YouTube vids from dipyourcar.com
 
I agree with the guys above. Start with plastidip. If you want something more permanent Rustoleum satin black or Krylon Fusion works great.

why remove the gray part when your going to plasti-dip it anyway ??, now the clip holes are showing..unless the holes doesnt bother you....
 
I'm not sure why there is so much disdain toward the silver trim piece, and why people think it would be better to rattle can their new car. Maybe I'm one of the few that actually likes it and thinks that it completes the front end by accenting the headlights. In any case, I suppose you can order a replacement trim piece if you decide later down the line that it was a mistake to spray paint the bumper.

The thing about plastidip is that it doesn't require alteration of anything oem. Which is to say, if someone doesn't like it, just peel it off and return to as new. No sanding, just clean and spray on 4+ coats.

I personally dislike chrome or chrome plastic, but also don't want to have to replace everything down the line if/when I want to return to stock.
 
Viynl seems pretty hard to get right compared to plastidip. I think a $10 can that you spray and can peel off sound easier. I've never looked, is vinyl expensive?
