2015 4Runner Limited-options for CarPlay

Hi! I have a 2015 4Runner Limited. I was wondering how I can get Apple CarPlay in my car. I don’t particularly want to replace my head unit. I read that entune 3.0 has CarPlay, anyway to upgrade to that? I have also seen “CarPlay dongles” on amazon, but I think those are for android tablets and head units. I mainly want CarPlay for Siri and/or Waze. I know I can stream BT audio, but it isn’t the same as seeing the map. Let me know if you know of any method for CarPlay?

I believe regardless you'll need a new headunit for a true apple carplay display. Even if they pushed an update it'll never look as clean as the newer factory headunits with carplay.

you can go to a dealer and look to see what the difference might be with our headunit vs a newer car. probably go look at the new camary or corolla or whatever.

I replaced my head unit to get CarPlay. Compared to the stock head unit, the new head unit has a larger screen, sounds better, and has some cool on screen gauges like tire pressure via Idatalink Maestro. Downsides of new unit as far as I can tell is that I can’t tell Siri to switch from usb music to XM radio, like you can with the Entune head unit. Waze doesn’t play on CarPlay, btw. Neither does google maps. You only get Apple maps. If the only CarPlay feature you want is maps, I’m not sure you’ll be super excited about being forced to use apple’s inferior map product. I don’t know anything about Entune 3.0 - this is the first I’ve heard of it so I can’t help you there.

You only get Apple maps. If the only CarPlay feature you want is maps, I’m not sure you’ll be super excited about being forced to use apple’s inferior map product.

iOS 12 supposedly will allow 3rd party mapping apps via CarPlay, they showed Waze as one of them in their keynote earlier this week.

Thank you for the feedback. The ONLY reason I want(ed) to move to a carplay unit is to use Waze in lieu of the entune navigation app. Since we are stuck with using apple maps on carplay compatible radios, I won't waste my money because Apple Maps sucks too.

IOS 12 is to be released in a few months and Apple is allowing Waze and Google Maps to work with CarPlay. I can’t wait!
