2015 AT Thru-hike

The last 10 days or so have been the most difficult so far. The cold weather is perfectly fine, but 12-18" snow will get to you. We pull off tonight just in time to watch some of the super bowl. Heading back out Tuesday morning though. We've got about 70 miles that we need to fly through.
 
I'm enjoying following this thread and the updates.
In a little over a month I'll be doing my first somewhat serious hike, on the AT from Apple Orchard Falls to Crabtree falls in Virginia. Should be around 65 miles I think. 5 days and 4 or 5 nights. I still need to get some more gear but after that I should be set.
 
Just the other day, I was just thinking of this thread and your adventure. Sounds like it is going well. Keep the updates and pics coming!

That's a good section to hike. We'll be entering VA is about 3-4 days.

We pulled off this morning due to some cold temps coming through.

I'm really starting to miss the 4runner, and working on it. At the house I still have my UCA's, and bumper to put on. I'm also working on coming up with some 3rd Gen replacement LCA's for the front to deal with the failing LBJ's, and a new roof rack idea I'm playing around with.

Bear spray. It's 50 state legal, allowed in National Parks, and you don't need a permit to carry it. Pretty brutal stuff, and it'll take down a person with no problem, or animal for that matter.
 
We're still going. In Waynesboro VA until Saturday morning, and then we're entering Shenandoah National Park. We'll have 900 miles down by Sunday.

Just got finished with this section. Apple Orchard Falls was very nice, but we missed Crabtree Falls. The section is pretty rough and rocky. I think we were through there in about 3 nights.
 
Just found this thread. Awesome! I hiked N>S in 2002 with my golden retriever. He did everything but the smokies and baxter. Wish he was still here…

So envious. Enjoy!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
 
Cool, thanks for the update. Yes, its warming up nicely. I hope you and your wife have been well so far. Looks like its time for you to start heading east a bit...

Weather has gotten better. Last night, and the last couple nights are getting cold. Worse thing is that we just sent home our cold weather gear in Harpers Ferry. Oh well, just one of those things that we'll deal with.
 
Let's see. We're in NY right now, and should be in CT on Tuesday. We've been hiking without much water up here. Not much in the forecast, and that sucks. The springs are running dry, and the water sources suck. We have a planned finish date of 7/9, and that should be an easy date to hit.
 
We've got 196 miles to go, and 12 days to finish. So, here are some pictures from the last few states.

Mahoosuc Notch in Maine. The hardest mile on the trail. This is a boulder jumble that took us 2 hours to get through.

so jealous - hopefully one day, but I can tell you - I'm 36, have a 5 month old, a 13 year old and a 17 year old in a few day.

It may be me in my 50's before I can do my through hike, my 17 year old has expressed interest in the 15 day variety and start in Georgia and do 15 days at a time with me.

May do that with him, but my goal is a through hike just like yours.
 
Finished the trail yesterday with great weather. Should be starting the drive home today or tomorrow. Here's a couple pictures.
