2015 Limited 4Runner General Questions

Hi everyone. Just wanted to know if anyone could give advice or clear-up confusions I have about my car. I traded in my 2013 Subaru STI for a 2015 4Runner, and had questions about operating it. I used to have a 1998 4Runner, my mom rives it now. I came back to the 4Runner family and wanted to know:

1. Does ATRAC only work when I'm in 4LOW? Can it only be pressed when on 4LOW?

2. Does the locking center differential only activate itself in 4LOW? Does my car also have a rear differential?

3. What speeds should I go in 4High, and 4LOW?

4. At what point should I stop using the full-time 4Wheel drive on my car?

5. Is the full-time four wheel drive similar to that of a Subaru?

6. Does anyone who drives a 2015 Limited 4Runner have concerns about the ride heigh or approaching angle? I love the look of my limited, but I'm concerned about how low the front is on my car?

1 - only works in 4L
2 - Center diff never locks itself - must turn knob to 4high lock or 4L lock and front and rear drive shafts will turn at same speed, like an SR5 or Trail. In regular full time 4x4 center diff allows front and rear driveshaft to turn at different speeds. You have front, center and rear diffs.
3 - In regular full time, any speed. In 4high lock, advise to be on low traction surface but really any speed - practically, wouldn't be driving over about 60 if slippery enough to use 'lock'. 4Low - whatever you need to get you through the obstacle - don't 'redline' engine rpm.
4 - When on constant slippery/low traction surface.
5 - Yes
6 - No concern for me but depends on your travels.

Do some searching here and read owners manual - tons of info available.
 
2. The center differential is limited slip (Torsen), so it can always distribute at least a little power between the front and rear axles.

I'm not sure how it works on the 5th gen, but on mine the center lock in 4 Hi is convenient because I can activate it while moving, like if I'm approaching a section of mud. That way I don't have to stop, shift to neutral, and go into 4 low.

The rear differential is open, but ATRAC will pulse the brakes if one wheel starts slipping to act like a limited slip differential. If works very well in my experience.

3. The top speed in 4 low is around 55mph, but you should use it when you need more power or control, such as carefully crawling over rocks and roots.

Let's say you come to a stop with the front wheels resting on an obstacle, like a curb. If you are in 4 high and you try to go over it from a stop, you will spin up the torque converter and once it makes enough torque you will launch over it and go way too fast.

In 4 low there is much more torque from the gearing, so it only takes a light touch of the throttle to go over stuff. That's easier on the torque converter, and it keeps you from going too fast and braking stuff.

On dirt or gravel roads without big rocks and roots, 4 high is usually appropriate.

4. I'm not sure what you mean. The Limited is full-time 4wd, so it's always on. You can lock the center differential, and you should do that if you need more traction to get going or not get stuck. For example, I might lock the center differential to go through water or deep sticky mud, go through a snow bank, crawl over roots and rocks, etc. You don't want to have the center locked on dry pavement because the drivetrain will bind up if you try to turn, making it difficult to turn and possibly causing excess wear on tires and stuff.

5. It's much better in my opinion. The 4runner has an extremely strong 4wd drivetrain that allows it to crawl over obstacles on trails. It is able to send almost all of the engine power to a single wheel if needed*. The Limited also has the advantage of a limited slip center differential, so it's excellent on the road (unlike Jeeps and lower trim level 5th gens where the transfer case is always locked if you are in 4wd). The Torsen center differential is similar to Audi's Quattro system and other high end cars.

*You would need front and or rear locking differentials to send all the power to one wheel, but ATRAC does a very good job as it is.

Subaru has a variety of all wheel drive systems, and they are not forthcoming about how they work or which vehicles have which system. As far as I know, they are generally based on viscous coupling or electronic clutches, which will slip unlike mechanical locking. And they can wear out with excessive use. I think they have some ability to use the brakes like ATRAC does, but when I try to learn more all I find is hype.

6. A stock height 4runner can do way more than you would expect. With a lift you can gain a bit of clearance, and aftermarket bumpers will help the approach and departure angles. In my 4th gen I usually scrape stuff in the center, not the bumper, and I think it's about an inch lower than the 5th gen.

depends on which Subaru you are driving and what years. the better systems are in the WRX's, Outback/Legacy in that order.

Continuous AWD

2014 Impreza 2.0i and 2014 XV Crosstrek models with 5-speed manual transmission; 2014 Legacy, Outback and Forester models with 6-speed manual transmission and 2015 WRX with 6-speed manual transmission. Here’s how it works. A viscous-coupling locking bevel-gear center differential built into the transmission case distributes torque 50:50 front-to-rear. Slippage at the front or rear wheels causes torque to transfer (up to 100%) to the opposite set of wheels.

Active Torque Split

Here’s the models that use it, All 2014 models, and the 2015 WRX, that are equipped with the Lineartronic continuously variable transmission (CVT). How does it work? An electronically managed continuously variable transfer clutch actively manages torque distribution in response to driving conditions, acceleration, deceleration and cornering. Slippage at the front or rear wheels causes torque to transfer (up to 100%) to the opposite set of wheels.

Variable Torque Distribution (VTD)

Here’s the models that use it, 6-cyl. Legacy and Outback models and the Tribeca. How does it work? An electronically controlled, continuously variable hydraulic transfer clutch works with a planetary gear-type center differential to control torque distribution between the front and rear wheels. Under most conditions, VTD uses a 45:55 torque split, with the rear-wheel bias contributing to handling agility. VTD responds to driving conditions to continually optimize torque distribution on all road surfaces. Slippage at the front or rear wheels causes torque to transfer to the opposite set of wheels.

Driver Controlled Center Differential (DCCD)
It's exclusive to the 2015 WRX STI and we covered it extensively here.

In addition to its Symmetrical All-Wheel Drive, Subaru also uses Vehicle Dynamics Control (VDC) to Augment their vehicles AWD capability. It comes standard on every 2014 and 2015 Subaru model except the rear-drive BRZ that gets VDC and rear-wheel traction control. The VDC system uses sensors “to compare where the vehicle is heading to where the driver is steering it.” The system will take corrective action to keep the vehicle on course if needed, and can apply brake pressure automatically and reduce torque to the wheels that need it.
