2016 4runner manifold leak? rotton eggs YUM

Just picked up a 2016 4runner with 25k miles, sounds like the truck has a cracked manifold, or a leak at the manifold. The engine ticks like a noisy valvetrain when cold, but quiets down when warm. you can clearly hear the ticking coming from the manifold and not the topend.... are these trucks known for cracked manifolds? or the manifolds not mated properly to the block? i did a search and it only brought up the gen 4 v8 cracked header problem.

also i will note that under WOT with the windows up, i get a wiff of rotten eggs every once in a while.

with the back window down i get a strong odor of rotten eggs every time under WOT

I do not think the cat is bad (with 25k on the clock), i think there is a leak before the cat and that is where the odor is coming from.

the truck is still under factory warranty, ill bring it to a dealer and report back.

These are honestly just traits of the 4runner. The exhaust is sucked back in when you have the rear window open, you just don't notice this smell in other vehicles. You could do a side exit exhaust to minimize this. The tick is there no matter what, just a noisy engine.

You are the first report I've read on here about a manifold issue at all. I would say it's very uncommon. It should still be under warranty. Have Toyota fix it.

no no no, even with the windows all up there is still a very strong odor of hydrogen sulfide? even under half throttle. i drove about a dozen other 4runners before i bought this one, some even let me keep them for a few days. none of them had any ticking noises, and none of them smelled at all.

on my way in to work this morning i absolutely could hear the light spudder of an exhaust leak under a load going uphill, thats when i put two and two together. either way i will keep everyone informed in case someone else has this problem. my neighbor works as the auto body manager at our local toyota dealer so i should not get jerked around too much on an explanation.

Although it's not a commonly noted problem here... you may want to check to ensure the rear hatch rubber seal is in place and that the hatch is sealing up correctly - it's possible that even under part throttle acceleration exhaust gases could be coming in if the seal isn't tight. Just something to check.

As already noted... the 4.0 V6 in these vehicles are not known to be quiet engines, and it's entirely possible for yours to be in the realm of 'normal' after all is said and done. The good news is that catastrophic engine failures in these vehicles are practically unheard of.
