Not really off roading. . Bad roads dirt roads yes rock crawling now plus wife has a 2007 v8 4Runner.
More looking for a truck that can tow has room and will last. Tired of crap out there. Toyota has always been great. 70k on the 4Runner and 68k on a scion and no issues at all.

I think what it comes down to really is just a matter of perspective. Next to my 4cylinder CVT Outback the 4Runner is quiet, has low end torque and is quick/powerful. I've drove the Subie cross country twice fully loaded with rooftop carrier over the Rockies and Sierras (From Maryland to California via I40 and California to Maryland via I80) and it made it. The 4Runner is obviously no drag racer. If it's not what your looking for in a vehicle so be it, and you don't want to make a $40k regret purchase, but I don't feel that it is dangerously underpowered and is very comfortable at highway speeds.

Considering your previous posts, as well as the above revelation, the 2016 LC 5.7 V8/8 spd. w/8100 lb towing vs. 4R V6 w/5000 lb towing = LC FTW. If you haven't already, you might like to check out IH8MUD forum. When we had our 80 and 100 series we found it a great place for info..
BTW, per C&D, 4R 0-60 is 7.5 not 8.5 as you believe. So the 4R may feel slow, but press the pedal and we find no problem passing or hitting 85 on the local entrance ramp.
Since we're throwing out numbers, C&D says the 2016 Jeep GC V6 with 8 speed has a 0-60 of 7.5 as well. Although, it is hard to make such a run when the Jeep is on a lift at the dealer.:heh:

Really, this again? Guy goes for what, maybe a 20 minute test run? Then whines about the power because he never read any of the dozen other posts - by people who have lived with and learned their truck's true behaviour and who have gone into great detail over the past six years - about how to extract the 4R's hidden power?

Deke guess your perfect and don't like an honest opinion about your truck. Oh well. Guess I don't want a truck that I have to slam on the gas pedal have it shift and scream to move or pull on a highway.
And please educate me and how do you get the most out of the truck? Besides slamming on the gas.

Sounds like a 4runner is not the vehicle for you. If you press down on the throttle, probably further than you are used to, it will rev up and go just fine. If doing that doesnt satisfy you, then dont waste your money, because it never will. I'm not aware of any other vehicle shy of 80k that will offer what a 4runner does as far as on AND off road ability.

I dislike people who compares the power of a v8 to a v6 and judge a vehicles power in a test drive. Never heard of a break-in period?

Plus not comparing a v8 to a v6 at all the v8 has the Same or less hp and torque
Plus my 1500 is a v6 and my sports car is a 6 cylinder.
Just feels like the power band is better.

Have you considered a Tundra? You'll like the power and towing capability, you still get Toyota reliability, and at a significantly lower price than a LC.
FWIW I was just recalling earlier when I first got my 2011 4runner I concluded that the throttle response was not linear. Seems like the first quarter or so of pedal travel doesn't open the throttle proportionately to the rest of the pedal travel. It took some getting used to. I think I even created a post about it on here.
Just thought I'd mention it since I think if you aren't used to it it could make the pedal feel kind of 'dead' and cause the driver to instinctively push down excessively, causing the truck to downshift a couple gears.

Maybe but have a pickup now and actually getting a home run of a deal on the lc. 10k off sticker and very nice money for my trade in.
Plan on keeping the lc for ten years or more.
Could be the dead pedal your describing. I kept pushing down and down and nothing then pressed it down and downshift and off we went.
Oh well loved the drive around until the merge but everything else was very nice. Really impressed and the interior is fantastic.
