I agree with you. I own a 2005 sport and I went to check the 2016 trail model yesterday. It almost feels like a downgrade. No power amp, no electronic start, no auto climate, no shelves in the trunk, cheaper arm rests, it certainly doesn't feel like 10 years have passed. I'll keep my 2005 and hope they'll do a better job with the 2017.I found a TRD Pro and went for a test drive. I was impressed with the looks and the shocks. As far as the drive went, not so good. Keep in mind I'm coming from a 2008 V8 sport with icon suspension, 285's, etc. The V6 was slow, the ride was wobbly, and no offense, but the 5th gen is a downgrade in a lot of ways. Simple things that are gone quickly added up. No tip start feature anymore? No auto climate control? Cheap knobs? Crap sound (compared to the JBL in the '08). Then came the price of non-negotiable $43k plus tax/tags/registration. I next went down the street for another test drive and my mind was made up. Did a quick search and brought this one home. I'll see ya'll on the trails.
They are coming out with a TRD Offroad now which is really just a Trail.

Good luck on that wait. Literally all those things you seem to need on a Trail will not be on the 2017 TRD Offroad aka Trail. Perhaps you should be shopping for a limited? At least with that model you can have some of those needless yet nice to have comforts.
this is what I did.
Then with my suspension, and other upgrades, I feel I have a more capable 4Runner than I would if I had gone with the PRO.

I owned a 2002 Sport that I loved but IMO my 2015 Trail is night and day better in every way. ;-)
What is a power amp? Are you too lazy to turn a switch to make it cooler or warmer? What are shelves in the trunk? I've never seen a 4Runner with a trunk or shelves. Arm rests are fine. What do you mean electronic start? DO you mean a little button you push to start it? Who cares about that.

I went from a vehicle with all that.. even had 4 way climate control for the rear with separate controls, rear heated seats, push button start, auto liftgate, air suspension, etc. Is it nice? Sure.. Is it necessary? Nope. Re-learning how to use my own arms and body has been the greatest joy of having my Trail. :vader:
