2016 TEP with hummingbird noise

No. they just pull the old needle bearing a drop a new one in.

It's most likely not the permanent fix as the root of the problem tends to be a casting issue with the carrier.. (ongoing issue for many years)

Carrier assembly most likely = entire diff in Toyota dealer/tech parlance. I really doubt that they would want techs busting open the clam shell and dealing with backlash pre load and all that jazz. Too much precision required for a dealer tech... they only do that at the factory....

I guess it could be on a case by case basis, depending on the dealership's decision. The dealer that I went to replaced the entire front differential carrier assy, part number: 41110-35A91 under warranty.
I do have a 3" lift kit and differential drop kit installed, I really don't think that the lift kit caused the needle bearing issues; from my understanding the diff drop kit should correct the axle angle. When I looked under my truck, it looks like the dealer did a good job on replacing my front diff and re-installing the front diff drop. The technician did not make any comments about my lift kit, but recommended that I use genuine Toyota gear oil in my new diff, however, I plan on using Mobile1 synthetic instead.

Quick update...

Dropped truck off, got a call later that day that they ordered the wrong part, didn't figure that out until they had the truck apart. Luckily I had a loaner car (2017 Rav4 Limited - not bad for a little thing). Finally got the right part in, replaced the needle from the TSB, old noise gone, new noise popped up so now I am waiting on a whole new differential to come in by mid-Feb. In the meantime I have my truck back.

Just got mine repaired yesterday. Mine is a '14 with 48k miles. The truck runs and drives smooth as silk again.

Ha, when I first got my 2016 sr5 prem and left off the throttle on the highway I thought that Entune was being buggy and placing a call with my iphone. (The humming noise sounded like the dialing tone when placing a call). So I frantically tried to figure out how to end a call. Then I figured out the phone ringing tone was coming from the differential every time I left off the throttle in 2wd. I've gotten used to it now, but if it goes neglected I'm guessing it can be dangerous?

2015 stock... just hit 20k miles and got the front differential replaced.
After driving 1k miles a new noise popped up....

So it seems like you can get the problem fixed, but there's a good chance that it will just come back. With as many vehicles as Toyota puts out, you'd think they could get this right.

Been awhile since I have logged in. I still have the issue that I originally reported a few months back. I was told the field tech would call and talk to the dealer....yeah no one ever called me so I assume that never happened. I just kept driving it and figured I would address it at the next oil change.

I just found this thread and noticed I am having similar issues on my 12 SR5. I have an Icon lift set at about 3" with a diff drop. I didnt notice this until I raised my front from 2.5" to 3".

Has anyone replaced their bearing using the east coast gear supply bearing?

Just dropped my 16' off to be looked at. It's been very cold here in CT and the bearing sounds horrible, like a zombie resides in my front diff. Luckily I found the service bulletin here on the forum and showed it to the dealer. Hopefully they can replicate the issue and it gets taken care of.

Well, I had to go back to ride with the tech but he was able to hear it the second time around. They are going to use the 60k mile warranty to fix it as the TSB didn't mention 16' models.

TSB has nothing to do with warranty, a TSB is just guidance for technicians

Dealer replaced the bearing today and I drove about 20 miles, no noises, no vibration. It's supposed to drop down to the teens again overnight so tomorrow morning will be the true test...

sub'd... I think that this is the noise I'm hearing. I'm currently over 900 miles away from home so I will have to wait until I get back to have it checked out.

Only have around 750 miles on my 2016 TE. Sounds like I'll most likely have this problem. Thanks for all the info so when I does happen I'll be sure to get it taken care of right away.

Hopefully that helps anyone with a new 4Runner that has the hummingbird noise issue.

I got my 2016 SR5 prem brand new in December 2016 and the noise was there the first day I picked it up. You'll swear it will sound like its coming from the front differential in 2WD letting off the throttle when at highway speeds. Its actually the rear differential.

Koons Tysons (Tysons Corner, VA) had a tech ride with me who heard it and with no questions asked, took my 4Runner in after the ride-along for repair covered completely under warranty. They gave me another sr5 prem rental (which didnt have the hummingbird noise) at zero cost to me (except gas). The repair took approximately 1 week. I paid zero except my usual gas.

As for the repair, my sr5 prem is flawless now.

Quick update on my TEP and a thread bump to those that may have not seen it yet. I finally got my 2016 TEP in and have the dealership perform the TSB under warranty. I have 28K miles. Everything is smooth again!
