2017 TRD Off Road vs TRD Pro

So I have got the option to either wait for a May/June delivery on a cement TRD Pro or I could drive a white TRD Off Road (regular not premium) off the lot tomorrow. OTD prices are:

Pro: 42,500
Off Road: 38,500

Off road does not come with KDSS.

What would yall do? I can see advantages and disadvantages to both, but I am curious to know what yall would do if you had this situation.

You pay tax on vehicles? If not the price is high on the off-road. If you do seems decent. I say it depends on your uses and if the pro is worth the squeeze. $4k buys a lot of cool stuff if you plan to mod....

What do you like about the Pro? You could buy the Trail and get the TRD grill, wheels, good tires, a 3" lift and a few other odds and ends and still be under the price of the TRD. Unless you plan to leave stock and you just like the look of the TRD. Or if you really want the Cement color.

What do you plan to do with it? Mild off roading, mall crawling, or hard core mudding? If you're after looks and status wait for the Pro. If you want a good base 4wd that you plan to mod on get the Off Road (ex-Trail). KDSS is not a deal breaker to me and I'm not even sure it comes on the new Pro's. It didn't come on the first couple years models. The TRD Pro is a Trail/Off Road with a better front skid plate, Bilsteins with a 1" front lift, tires/wheels, unique paint color, A TOYOTA grill insert and badging. If you think all that is worth 4k more then wait for that. It will probably retain its value better as a limited package also.

I've seen a lot of guys replace the Bilstein suspension the Pro comes with because it is limited in what it can be adapted for (i.e. more lift). I've seen a bunch of other people buy the TRD Pro badging and grill insert to make theirs look like one. But we all have different priorities. I personally would rather buy a base model and build it up to what I want than spend extra money on a "package" that may come with features I didn't want in the first place.

We pay tax at like 6.5%. Not sure what is driving the price up on the Off Road, it seemed high to me as well. The MSRP + delivery on it is 40,290 so I thought 38,500 was a deal until I looked at toyota.com.

Should have said the prices are pre tax, but do include all other fees.

This is my sentiment tonight (but I have had a few beers!) I don't really care that much for the TRD Pro specific badging and grill, but the other items it comes with like the suspension and tires make it more attractive because it makes the Pro feel like it doesn't "need" anything driving off the lot. That feeling is what put me back into 4Runners after considering going to a Tundra. The Tundra is a great truck, but off the lot it felt like it needed stuff done right away to feel like a truck. That was even the case for me with the Pro Tundra. After driving the 4Runner it just felt right.

Is the offroad a premium?

I was sent a sheet via email with the vehicle details and it only said TRD Off Road. No mention of being a TRD Off Road Premium.

Interesting. I paid the number you listed for the offroad but mine is a premium with all options other than KDSS.

Was in the same boat. I ended up getting a pro. A couple of reasons. The main reason is I wanted the color and you can't get it in the off road. The other is the resale. Most 4runners in general have great resale but the Trd prices have been nuts. This might change over time but I don't think so. I would say if you getting a Trd pro for a good price I would probably keep it. In my area the cheapest dealer was 2k markup over msrp. I had to go out of state to get mine. At the end of the day get what you want.

I just picked up my TRDP tonight. Have a 14TEP prior with 5100's, Michelins, Spidertrax spacers and Poly bushings on all swaybar contact points. It was 25 miles on Interstate to home and "WOW". Huge difference in ride over the 14TEP. Flatter and took road bumps much better and steering felt much faster. Overall a great first ride home

Yeah. Hard to compare since we are on different sides of the country, but I paid a little more for my trail premium, with kdss, with floor liners and cross bars.

Shop some more dealers, talk with the internet sales manager.

If you only keep things for a year or two...Pro for the crazy resale value. If that doesn't matter and you plan to mod it...go for the off-road. I drove both and went with kdss. We plan to keep this truck for at least 10 years. I also started mods with only a few hundred miles on it. Lol!

Best of luck man, you'll love the new Runner which ever model you go with!

Oh and if I could have convinced my wife to not have a sunroof, I had a chance at a quick sand Pro....and would have bought it solely for the color! That, is my opinion on the only reason I'd buy a Pro.

Did your TEP have KDSS?

Pro seems to have better resale value. We went with the Offroad Premium with Kdss. My wife will use the Kdss every day. The Pro would rarely be used to its full potential. We have no plans to lift or go with bigger tires.

If you plan to add bumpers, winches and install a stiffer suspension, go with the Off Road.
If you plan to keep the vehicle mostly stock and don't mind waiting till May, go for the pro. The Pro will have a higher re-sale value, either short or long term.
Also, the Cement color is pretty cool and unique.

You don't?

Shit, $40,000 x 7% = $2,800.

If you don't have sales tax on vehicles in Oregon I know where I'll be buying my next one!

We don't. Our registration is stupid cheap too, $86 every two years.

Lots of other stupid crap we get hammered on though. Income and high property tax. I'd give up income for a sales tax anyway of the week though, then "I" control my taxation....

:wtf:
