2017 TRD Off Road vs TRD Pro

KDSS is not Magical because of the reliability issues. Good luck finding a dealer to repair your broken KDSS. Plus KDSS drives very stiff.

KDSS is just not worth the hassle. If you cannot afford the TRDP then a TEP without KDSS is the best way to go after spending thousands to make it look like a TRDP. :hiding:

Reliability issues? Very few and far between but you know it's so terrible that they include it on their flagship LC (little less robust but same concept). Let's talk about blistien trd shocks on the TRD Pro that had the clunk issue. So no model is free of scrutiny. Personal opinion is both are very capable but the only way I would have ever paid a little more for the TRD Pro was the special color. Other than that one is getting a mild suspension upgrade which a ton of the guys here seem to get rid of and the appearance package (I love the grill and the valences). I love people that get up in arms about which is better. The way I see it they both have their advantages.

Mod. This thread is turning in to the same old same old which is better battle. It's pointless, I suggest it gets closed down. We already have the sticky differences between models.

I was just actually joking around with my post.

All the four runners are great. That's why this whole discussion is so funny.

Just wait till the 2018s are announced. Don't overthink it, get what you want after they announce something. Trust me, just stop beating your self up over it. Everyone is just going to tell you to buy what THEY bought since it's the BEST EVER.

Thanks, any ETA on when 2018 will be announced?

If I plan on getting the new front/rear bumpers and such... would that interfere with safety features that are rumored to be added to the 2018 model?

I'm ready to go now... but shit.. maybe I should wait hehe.

If you add that much weight, you're going to be replacing the suspension to support it whether you have the turd or the off road. So, if you got a pro you'd be throwing the cost of the slightly upgraded suspension down the drain. Of course you could sell it while still new to recoup some cost, but it doesn't really make sense. Get the off road premium, replace that suspension with something nice, and you'll have a truck with more features and better suspension than the pro. That's what I would do.

Only thing I can think of to still move forward on the PRO would be that AWESOME cement color...

Sell the shocks, but the beefier ones for the new bumper/front hehe

that would be cool.

But i think i've been convinced to wait for 2018 release...

:-( damnit i want to spend money!!

Maybe it's just me, but I wouldn't buy a 2017 off road standard or premium purely because I think the TRD Off-Road badge, seat embroidery and fake CF dash is just plain distasteful. The Trail editions were clean and unbadged which I personally prefer. If I were buying new I don't know if I could pull the trigger and be happy with Toyota's half assed attempt to make some minor updates for 2017 with the TE --> OffRoad update. To each his/her own...

On point there man :(

Couple of things...

The TRD Pro has always had Softex seats. It also has homelink, premium entune and an auto dimming mirror...oh yeah, and automatic headlights. But I digress...

Judging by your whole tone it's fairly obvious which trim level you own - it's a good thing you didn't go with the 'lesser' model!

It really depends on what you want. An appearance package or a better suspension package. Some people would put more value on appearance. Some on performance. I chose performance. Sounds like you chose appearance. That's neither good nor bad. Just different desires for different uses.

The fact that you think you need to run to a dealer for every fix is probably indicative of your mechanical skills. Consider that not everyone is afraid of a wrench. I've run GX460 air suspension in my TEP for a while too. I'm pretty sure my dealer wouldn't have much to do with that either.

Also KDSS has proven to be exceptionally reliable. Oddly enough far moreso than the bilstein TRD Pro shocks.

I like the so-called stiff KDSS handling. I don't get the whole TRDP thing. It's a Trail with some things I don't need. And no sun roof. If a meteorite falls on my TEP and kills the KDSS I'll go buy another one and put trash bags over the new spiffy TRD head rests.

As far as not being able to afford a TRDP... HA. I toyed with the idea of buying new his and hers Land Cruisers - outright, with cash - for a while before getting the 4Runner and Avalon Touring. I got the TEP I wanted and she got the Avalon Touring she wanted.

Now all I need is that beach front cottage I'm looking for. Spring is coming. :jump: I started working, saving and investing in 1966. Retirement is fun.

You my friend have absolutely no idea about what you speak. If you could show me a shred of data to go with those bold statements then that would be swell.

I was simply correcting you. For you to automatically assume I drive a TRD Pro perpetuates your ignorance even further. It sounds like you could use some reading comprehension.

His and her Land Cruisers - that's 4 TRD Pro 4Runners! I have the LX570. It's a wonderful vehicle! You can't go wrong with a Cruiser.

Right now it's educational. Hopefully someone learns something. If not I will close it.

Also if you need a mod then tag them. We don't read every post lol.

I love the new badges on the Off-Road models! Go figure. :)

Why do you say go with the Off Road over the Pro if you want bumpers? I do want to add a front bumper:

2010-2016 4Runner Front Bumper, 5th Generation

and rear bumper:

4Runner Rear Bumper & Tire Rack, 5th Gen (2010-2016)

Is there something that the TRD PRO can't handle with the new bumpers that the Off Road handles better?

Thanks,

RR

The TRD Pro suspension has a softer spring rate than the trail/sr5.
If you add front and rear bumpers, there will be more brake diving etc.
a stiffer suspension would offer more support with the added weight.

So through the process of post cross checking and incorrect info elimination (i.e., actually reading the product information sheets):

- The TRDP does not come with turn signal indicators and puddle lights on the outside mirrors (at least in the US)

- Only the SR5 Premium and TRD Off Road Premium offer a sunroof option (used to be standard in both Premium packages in pre-2017 US models)

- Only the TRD Off Road (and the previous years Trails) offer KDSS as an option

AND

- Only the non-Premium SR5 and TRD Off Road are available with SR5/Trail/Off-Road Fabric Seats

Incidentally, my read is that KDSS is MOST useful for a multi-purpose (on road/off road/towing) vehicle, as it allows the use of larger stabilizer bars (1.68" front, versus 1.22" for 4x2 and Limited and 1.18" for all the other 4x4 vehicles; 1.18" rear, versus .787" for all non-KDSS equipped models), but still has acceptable off-road articulation.

Most industry reviewers seem to notice the contribution of KDSS the most when cornering on pavement. Coming from a track car background, I can't really say how much roll resistance you want/need for an off-road only vehicle, but I like the amount of roll resistance a KDSS-equipped vehicle has on the road. If you're putting together a pure off-road machine, you may not need it...

p.s. I think the (way too subtle) message many here are trying to convey is that if you are going to add a lot of weight in the form of armor and/or you are going to remove and replace a lot of the factory items (especially suspension, wheels, and tires), you might want to reconsider buying a model that has a lot of options you are going to remove...

SO Sorry I pushed your "KDSS" button Jetboy. But dude if you are going to shit on people who choose to buy a TRDP you need to man up. Seriously.

I was being sarcastic about the KDSS system because it has been discussed in this community and its hilarious to read the silly back and forth arguments.

Yes I can think of better ways to spend my free time. I am not interested in fixing KDSS on a 4runner. I would rather play guitar or ride my motorcycle.

We all know about your great mechanical skills(you remind us constantly) and more power to you. Have fun you mechanical badass.

But seriously. Is it really necessary to rip on TRDP owners in a 4runner community. Get a clue.

And yes you are correct that a TEP with KDSS is a killer vehicle but a TRDP is also a killer vehicle.

I was just looking at the 2017 brochure. www.toyota.com/4runner/ebrochure

I'm retired and easily amused. Got the girlfriend off to work a couple of hours ago and don't feel like starting on her taxes yet.

Had to chuckle at the carpeted floor mats that come on the TRD Pro. That is carpet on page 15 isn't it? Good to know that there are 'no off the shelf components here' :)

"Our TRD Pro Series vehicles are factory tuned
and built to take you way off-road. No off-the-shelf components here;
our engineers spend countless hours designing, testing and tuning with
passion."

Yeah, I know it's all marketing, but still... they give you carpeted mats to go "way off road"?

A friend in college had a '72 Land Cruiser, you just hosed out the floors.

:)
