2017 TRD Offroad engine tick/knock?

Hi All

I would like to ask for opinions on this as I think my 2017 TRD Offroad doesn't sound so good when I start her up in the mornings.
Some information: Mobil 1 0w-20 synthetic with Wix filter, 12000kms on the odo,
The tapping is driving me nuts when it's cold and it can be quite loud at times until it warms up then it just sounds like the regular 1GR-FE diesel sound.

Sounds like a 10 year old design to me :biggrin1:

Mine sounds exactly the same. Unless its puking oil out of a hole in the block, I will never assume that any of the noises this motor makes is anything but normal. As long as you change your oil, this motor will outlive the 4Runner it sits in.
 
doesn't get quite as cold here in Florida as it does in BC, but it is typically pretty loud when I first start it in the morning..
 
This thread just made me sink into my seat with relief as I am new to Toyota all together and have been worried as all get out because of this noise.

Sounds normal to me as well. BUT and it's a big one, that cough right at the beginning doesn't sound the best.

Yes
I used mobile one and a Wix filter

Replace engine oil and filter - every 10k or 12 mo (severe: 5k or 6 mo)

Torque specs:
Oil pan drain plug - 30 lb-ft (14mm deepwell)
Oil filter cap - 216 lb-in/18 lb-ft (TOY640 with 15/16" or 24mm socket, 2" ext)
Oil filter drain plug - 108 lb-in/9 lb-ft (3/8" drive 6" ext)
No. 1 engine under cover sub-assembly - 21 lb-ft (12mm deepwell)
Front lower bumper cover - 71 lb-in (10mm)
Engine under cover seal - 21 lb-ft (12mm)

Parts:
Oil - 6.6 qts 0W-20 ILSAC GF-5 oil - Toyota part # 00279-0WQTE-01
Oil pan drain plug gasket - Toyota part # 90430-12031
Oil filter element kit - Toyota part # 04152-YZZA5

Special tools:
AST TOY640 filter wrench (or Toyota SST 09228-06501)
~ 2ft of 5/8” ID tubing (for oil filter drain pipe)

Sounds pretty much like mine and the rest of the 4.0s I've been around. Don't panic.

The other part of your video sounds exactly like mine, except it's a male voice. Daddy, Daddy,, Daddy??
 
My 16 TRAIL sounds the same. I bought it used w/ only 21k miles last summer so I thought something was wrong too. It gets cold here in Montana. When it first starts, it always high idles and sounds like the radiator fan is running until the idle starts going down after about 15 seconds.
Sometimes I forget this motor is old school.
 
theres a big write up in TW about the design of the motor causing the tapping. If I recall it’s the angle/position of the plug and combustion in relation to the exhaust valves and manifold

Piston slap...every modern motor has this, anyone here familiar with GM LS motors....they are notorious for piston slap? Aluminum heads will do this until the engine warms up.

Absolutely normal. It's cold valve train noise. LS3 owners stress over it (the "sewing machine" sound) constantly on forums. Its harmless, and goes away for the most part as the motor warms up. Don't stress over it.
