Toyota no-likey cylinder deactivation. They claim that over time it reduces reliability because half the cylinders wear faster and it puts the engine out of balance. Its part of the reason why they went with the Atkinson Cycle.
My wish? A 4Runner with LC70 underpinnings.
Everyone wins. Toyota wouldn't have to spend money on developing a new platform. Front & rear solid axles and lockers. If they bring it over with the manual, the forums would explode. It would have the appeal of a G-Wagen without the douche-factor and the ridiculous costs. They can still keep the mainstream clientele with optional 20" wheels for the bling crowd and 2WD models for the southern street trucks. The Jeep guys would finally stfu (Okay, some things may never happen).
They'd probably have to revamp interior/exterior with fancy lighting, insulation, and soft touch plastics for it to sell here. And it would need a gas engine of some sort (probably whatever's in the new Tacoma). But it would bring enthusiasts to Toyota.

They would sell 12 of them, if that.
Very few people actually want a vehicle with a solid front axle. Most who do buy a Jeep and wouldn't buy anything else. For the rest of us who offroad occasionally, we wouldn't put up with how a SFA rides and drives.

A modern SFA coil spring setup on a LWB SUV isn't bad. I've driven an FJ80 and rode in a WJ Grand Cherokee, and both felt comfortable to me. Granted you won't be carving corners like in a 3rd or 4th gen Runner, but the current model isn't focused on sports-car-like handling anyway.
This isn't going to be bucking all over the place like my old roommate's YJ.
I'd prefer a manual transmission, but I HATE the electrically-engaged low range on our trucks. That really should be replaced by a manual shifter or at least put the servo on the outside of the transfer case so a person could engage the shift for manually if the low range servo froze up, as it will when not used.

Compared to a modern IFS it is that bad. Which is why only the G class and Wrangler use a SFA.
Yes. The platform has since been revamped to improve ride comfort. They'd have to modify it to fit rear coils. The frame is just a frame; there haven't been many advancements in this type of construction, apart from the recent usage of high strength steel.
I respectfully disagree, but you are entitled to your own opinion.
I don't mind the ride quality in either of those vehicles in LWB form.

My wish list for my next gen 4runner (I'm lurking to buy one but hoping some of these happen..not in order).. I was killing time at work so this is just random thoughts. Sorry if these are big...
1. Green/Tan colors available..
2. heated seats an option for base model cloth instead of having to only offer it in the limited (boo..)
3. larger touchscreen...like widescreen that is in line with the driving line..so you don't have to look away from driving (land rover/bmw/jag..)
4. android/google cars.. (it's coming..bluetooth audo, google maps..mass aps...)
5. head unit displays oil temp/4X4 status config/water temp..(warm up temp Subaru has that blue light that turns off once the car is warmed up to proper temp) fuel economy ect..
6. Owners manual is digitally in the head unit but also all mainteance items automatically alert you.. I know that's partly in it..
7. part time 4X4, prefer lever..
8. basic reliable V-6 (all about reliablility and longevity)
9. 6 speed auto (better fuel economy..)
10. base model SR5 ~$30k
11. Less fluff/weight/size.. less space ship looking and more retro..
12. Use the Toyota badge ver. new..heck even go retro and use the old one!
13. moonroof optional to lower intro price
14. fold away roof rack (like the subaru outback)
15. Tan interior optional..
16. rear seats fold totally flat no crease or bump..
17. a sexy japanese voice sounding GPS...
18. An attractive Japanese styling speedo cluster...

As for SFA's and the "rough ride", I've got no problem with my trucks riding like trucks. I've been on multi-day road trips in SFA trucks with friends and not a single man complained.:snacker:
With respect, you're not the average car buyer.
I drove a loaner 2012 Camry for two weeks while my '03 4Runner was getting a frame replacements. I was struck by just how much better the Camry road and drove compared to the 4Runner. And the Camry is not, by any stretch of imagination, a driver's car -- it is an automotive appliance.
SFA trucks drive and ride even worse than an IFS 4Runner. That extra unsprung weight upfront does nothing good for handling and ride.
As it is right now, the 4Runner is more trucky than most car buyers want. An SFA would significantly reduce the population of buyers who would consider it.
In a world of crossovers, the market for an IFS 4Runner is limited. The market for an SFA 4Runner is minuscule.
I'm not sure anyone's disputing that fact.
It's a shame that conjecture aimed at what the 4Runner could be is more exciting than what it will be.

Most of what I would want are electronic upgrades, like those found in '14-'15 Highlanders, such as lane departure warning; upgraded cruise control; etc.
Toyota has blown it in the 2016 Tacoma by NOT offering these same upgrades. Heck, the 2016 Tacoma doesn't even get ventilated seats on the Limited trim level. Really?
Lastly, either fix the Entune system & NAV system or buy something else from a different vendor. The current systems are a major FAIL!

Let me give you a reason why Toyota does this:
Every single thing you mentioned like
Lane departure
Upgraded cruise
Ventilated seats
Better Entune
Better Nav
Is exactly why I personally bought a 4Runner. I don't want all the driving aids. If I did there are many reliable SUV's (Lexus GX, Land Cruiser) that have all those things. A Highlander would be a choice too.
In a recent post I speculated that soon, manufacturers will offer two main choices:
"Automatic" cars that have all the stuff that helps the driver drive the vehicle and "manual" vehicles that let the driver drive the vehicle.
What you want is fine but it is opposite of what I want. Both are offered and you will just have to choose if you would want a Highlander Platinum or a 4Runner SR5 for example. They both do the same thing for 99% of the time (stay on pavement) and the Highlander will do it in much more style and comfort than the 4Runner. The 4Runner will go off road like a champ but lacks in many of the creature comforts and driver nannies. I think eventually that's the way vehicles will be marketed too.
