2018 Sequoia is Refreshed

Welcome to the new Toyota. They are just riding out on their reputation now. Toyota knew that if they whipped every other maker in reliability it would reap major rewards in the future. Toyota does not need to spend all kinds of money refreshing their vehicles because they practically sell themselves due to that badge on the grill. When other manufacturers start kicking butt (the new ZR2 for example) and people start buying other brands, Toyota will then be forced to truly update their line.

This will take a lot of time to happen. I mentioned the ZR2 and even though it is a far superior truck to the Tacoma TRD PRO, the Tacoma will still sell cuz people love that badge on the grill.

Yeah, so, this is completely false. Do some research on TNGA, GA-L, the entirely new engine lineup, next gen multi-stage hybrid system, take a look at the new Camry, brand new TT V6 and 10AT, etc.

Toyota spent a few years in the shadows but it's clear that they were gearing up for "all new everything" beginning in 2017. Only problem is that body-on-frame vehicles like Tundra, Sequoia and 4Runner are not a part of the "new Toyota," and the Tacoma barely so.

My personal opinion is that Toyota is looking for ways to divest almost all of their BOF assets except for LC 200 and Tacoma/Hilux and a handful of others that serve a purpose in second and third world countries.

So, in other words, Toyota doesn't make any new trucks anymore, and is completely riding on their reputation, and now only sells trucks because of the badge on the grill.

Maybe its just me but the newer models being made or refreshed don't really do it for my anymore...

I think Toyota has lost their way trying to make the mommy-suv shoppers happy.

I even wanted to like the 5th Gen 4Runner a lot more than I actually do... my 4th Gen is getting up there in age and mileage and my replacement options don't inspire confidence.

It literally looks the same. New headlamps and a slightly different dashboard is all I can tell. Looks to be the exact same grille. I usually like to stay on the side of "if it aint broke, don't fix it" but Toyota will have this one going on 11 years on the same chassis. I thought the 2nd gen Tacoma was suprising at 10 years. How long will they keep the chassis?

A new motor here, a new trans there...big deal. The truck lines have not been seriously updated in years! They said the Tacoma was "all new". BS. It has the same frame from before and the same body just different bed sheet metal, front end, and a Camry motor. Huge disappointment. The most exciting thing from Toyota right now are the new Lexus'. Of course I can't afford $92k for a Lexus LC. If I could I would have a 79 series Land Cruiser imported instead.

I could barely afford this 4runner but I'm so happy I bought when I did cuz I fear the only big changes that will happen with the new models are a higher price. Will the new 4runner go the way of the Nissan Pathfinder? Let's hope not. Hopefully I'm wrong and the new 4runner is bad to the bone but given the direction Toyota has been taking their TRUCK line, I don't see them coming out with anything spectacular. Again I hope I am wrong.

That's what they did with the 4Rrunner in 2014 and those sell just fine. I guess they figure if it worked for the 4Runner, then why not the Sequoia.

The difference is that the 4Runner is unique in it's space. It's one of the few BOF SUV's with a solid rear axle that still has good on road manners. In fact, it's the only vehicle in it's class.

The Sequoia on the other hand is competing against the Tahoe, Yukon, Armada, and Expedition. A segment in which all of those have either seen recent or impending updates (Expedition). They all features better interiors, better appearance, better powertrains, transmissions, and MPGs than the Sequoia. That's a competitive market and Sequoia sales numbers and pricing is a joke. The same can be said for the Tundra, it's being outclassed by Ford, Chevy, RAM, and Nissan and the Tundra is the most outdated by far. There doesn't seem to be anything new on the horizon for the Tundra for at least 2-3 more years.

If I'm in the market for a full size SUV or a full size truck, I'm not even considering the Sequoia or Tundra at this point.

Did you forget about the Wrangler? ;) Next gen coming shortly too.

Of course you can look elsewhere on this forum for differences ad nauseam, but the t4r's main competition is about to get a whole lot better.

Toyota has lost it. Just cashing in on selling 15 year old technology. Its sad. Only new mommy wagons get new stuff. They make kick ass LC 70 series still but too girly to import. Might ruin their reputation in the states as most vanilla and boring car and truck company.

Its sad.

I realize they get cross shopped a bunch but they're entirely different vehicles. I have a Wrangler now and am counting down the days till I can get into a 4R. Chrysler is incapable of building anything with quality. I might have just joined here but I've been reading posts for close to a year and the sort of issues people encounter here pale to what I see and have experienced myself with a Wrangler. The new one may be more modern, but it'll still be a turd.

I have a wrangler and its been great. Just as good as any toyota. And toyota has some ******* engineering to boot. While i love toyota sometimes i believe they are not perfect. Totoya is cashing in now on all the BOF trucks. The Tundra is far shadow of detroit stuff with horrible fuel mileage. TRD Pro packages are cool but not sure you are getting what you pay for. Oh well still love my 4runner. But gotta say I love the Rubicon a lot more. More rugged. Top off in summer is a blast.

True, and I haven't seen the numbers, but I don't think the Sequoia was selling well in the first place. Toyota's marketing and development for anything but the Camry and Prius is just really pathetic.

No it's not the best looking thing I have seen but there is for sure worse looking vehicles sitting on show room floors today, especially in the truck and SUV markets there is a lot of ugly out right now. I am glad I am not in the market for a new vehicle at the moment because there is not much out I like. Ford missed with the new Expedition it's dissappoing for sure so is the '18 F150. My wife has a '10 Expedition EL that we love but if something happens to it I for sure won't replace it with that thing they unveiled the other day. Before that she had a Yukon i for sure wouldn't buy a Current Suburban or Yukon XL based on looks alone.

How's everyone feeling about the refresh now that we have in person perepsectives. I've watched a couple YouTube videos and it definitely looks a bit nicer. Not sure it's enough to sway me from a Yukon or Suburban. Also, knowing that it will be completely re-designed in the next couple of years makes me hesitant to spend a lot of money on an outgoing body style.

Bye felicia..............all the vehicles you mentioned Tahoe, armada, expedition just look at their reliability ratings. The old saying if its not broken why fix it. Everything you mentioned about better powertrains..false, better transmission..false...better appearance..well thats an opinon. Better MPGs...well duh its because of these 8 speed trans they put in the damn things(that have a list of problems. But again the Sequoia/Tundra from a practicality standpoint are two very reliable vehicles that will run for a long time with minimal maintenance, hell they will both even cool your butt while you do it. But if you want chevy app to watch your vehicle, well that is definitely something you can have installed aftermarket on your vehicle, and in most cases is better than factory.
Outclassed by Ford, Chevy, Ram......sure I guess if you are more distracted by the gadgets and electronics and your opinion of appearance than sure. The reality is for everyday truck stuff the Tundra day in and day out will keep up with them until they have a mechanical failure, even when the Tundra is pulling more than suggested ratings. It is a bullet proof vehicle made to work, not drive around the city and look pretty.

And for everyone complaining about the cost of a LC and that is the only reason they have gotten one, well lets be frank those same people that actually CAN afford a Landcruiser are instead driving around dressed up Tahoes(ie.Yukons) for the same price that you can get a Landcruiser for. No matter what it comes down to brand loyalty, but as others have said I wouldn't jump into an Expedition or Yukon based on looks alone.

The updated front end is really nice in video/person... much more so than pics. New face on the Tundra is really sharp too.

It's a shame they didn't go a little further and drop in the dashboard from the refreshed '14 Tundra, because that would have gone a long way for the interior. New dash plus the 8AT from the Land Cruiser would have made the Sequoia relevant for another 2-3 years.

It's definitely sharper looking. I agree, they should've updated further the interior. Someone mentioned eyeing the GM offerings. I don't care how old the powertrain/tech is in the Sequoia. It's a solid full size SUV. Period.

I dunno about this one...

I am a big Toyota fan, id like to get something with a bit more power than the current 4Runner or something that's a bit more sporty.

I've been toying with the idea of buying a GX or LC, but then one day I realized I could just buy a Ford Raptor and actually save money.

The rub is that Toyota already offers the 4.6 and 6 speed on the gx, they just leave if off the 4R for some reason.
