2019 ORP stolen in Seattle

So an update: 2.5 days later I got a call from the cops 2 towns over (Renton aka Fenton), they found my truck at 3am, the thief overdosed in it at a 711 and had music blasting at full volume. They revived and arrested him for simple misdemeanor possession of stolen property and he was released an hour later.

I get to my truck and take a look, inside smells like cat piss, cigs, and cologne, full of personal belongings, burglary tools, stolen dewalt drills, a wig, suitcases of dirty clothing, a giant meth pipe, some crack pipes, a drug scale, and lots of foil sheets with burnt fentanyl residue. looks like the shithead moved in from his tent into my truck at least for the 2 days he had it, plates and stickers were removed, my 1000$ gunner dog kennel also gone. Overall the truck does no appear to have major damage, interior has a couple of cig burns and meth/heroin/whatever powder and crystals in various crevices, cracked windshield...dash trim was ripped up a bit as he was trying to get behind the kenwood headunit. It doesnt appear to have actually been pissed in, leaving the windows down while in my garage for a week got rid of most of the odor.

The dashcam recorded the entire theft, including the guy approaching the car and driving away - face visible and clear. He drove with the ebrake engaged for a solid 10 blocks, almost caused 3 accidents while initially getting away. At some point he ripped the dashcam off the windshield but left it dangling on the wire, it was facing backwards inside the truck and recorded hours of hilarious crackhead footage...meth and fentanyl smoking, lots of people in and out, mainly hanging out at various gas station minimarts according to gps stamps on the videos. I've provided some footage to Seattle PD, hoping to hear back from the detectives and get him that felony auto theft charge.

Dealing with insurance has been a nightmare. They initially scheduled an adjuster to come out to my house to look at the truck, but would not be getting inside or drive it because of "biohazard" and fentanyl hysteria. My appointment then was suddenly cancelled and now they want to total the truck without even looking at it. It's a 2019 ORP w/ 30k miles on it and honestly just needs a good cleaning and a trip to Toyota for an inspection. However, they almost insist on totaling but are unable to provide me with the value I'd be getting paid without first towing it to a salvage yard. My options seem to be the following:

1) total the truck, get it off my property and take the money, amount unknown
2) keep the truck, get money to redo the entire interior
3) total the truck, keep it but w/ a salvage title, get paid out a lesser amount than fair value, but not by much.

Anyone have any idea of how to best proceed? I'm 99% sure there's actually nothing wrong with the truck mechanically, due to my upgraded ICON struts and skids. The alignment seems to be fine, engine sounds normal, transmission behaving normal. I think option 2 would be the wisest choice, as the truck value is right around 40k, and I could easily get a check for 8-10 for repairs/cleanup. Option 3 is good if I keep it forever until its junk, otherwise selling it w/ a salvage title would be a pain. Option 1 is not yet clear, because I dont know how much they're willing to give me for a 2019 ORP with 30k on it.

Write your options down with pro's and con's columns and DONT RUSH your decision. Think through your options.

If totalling = you can keep it, mod the hell out of it, than do just that and get a daily driver. Make this thing a beast that you dont care if it gets scratches/dings. Just my opinion.

I also went through an accident ordeal that I'm still in the midst of. Fun stuff.

Regarding CCW and shooting the thief - yes im a CCW holder and I carry, and, no it would not be a justified shooting, and such action would result in a serious felony charge and possibly many years in prison. please educate yourselves, and believe me I'd have loved to swiss cheese this stupid ****

in this case no it wouldn't be justified. If the thief started driving at the person the SUV would be consider a weapon and a shooting would be justified.

Not justified for sure, but lets just say that this person will need to be fed through a feeding tube for a very long time. I can reassure you that he would never do that again!!!!!!!

When I had to make this decision for different reasons (kid going 40 in a 25 zone hit my car parked in front of my house), the insurance company happily let me know how much they would give me if we went the "totaling the truck" route. So I'd ask them for that as it is one less variable for you to have to estimate.

I've had 2 cars totaled while I lived in Seattle, and both times they gave me fair market value.

This past January we were paid $28,000 for a 2015 Trail, completely stock with about 85,000 miles when insurance totaled it. Maybe that will give you a starting point for a possible payout.

Pass on a truck that was used as a drug mobile, the tiniest bit of fentanyl can do a lot of harm and I would always wonder if it really was cleaned well enough.

Just my opinion.

I’m sorry you’re having to deal with all of this. It sucks.

Personally, I would have no interest in keeping it. You never really know what went on inside. I wouldn’t want to get pulled over for something as simple as speeding but then have a police k9 have a positive hit based on something left in the vehicle from this ordeal.

With used 4Runner prices being higher than ever, I would think you should be able to get a good payout from the insurance company. Print out comps of similar age and mileage 4Runners in your area to show what it would cost to replace it.

If you go a route which involves you keeping it with a salvage title, know that salvage title vehicles are generally worth around 50% vs non-salvage title.

If at any point you feel the insurance company isn’t being reasonable, I wouldn’t hesitate to consult an attorney.

dude total the truck. total it as fast as you can. does it suck, yes. that truck is a rolling biohazard. total it, get a new one even if you have to wait a bit and then start fresh. trying to redo the interior is not worth your time.
