2020 model issues/observations

Hi. This is my first post here.
I got a beautiful red 2020 TRD Off Road back in December. Everything was great until last week when I tried to start it and it needed a boost. (I’d been working at home so it had been sitting for a week.) After the boost, it was ok but I was a bit worried as I didn’t know why it was drained. Tried again today and it was even worse. I couldn’t even get the doors open with the smart key.

It’s basically brand new and only has about 2000 miles on it so everything is covered. However, this has me worried. A bum alternator, perhaps? Everything was fine when I was driving it daily pre-COVID-19.

By any chance do you keep the key fob in your car or very near to the vehicle when parked. The reason I ask as I read in the owners manual that this can drain the battery as the fob is in communication whenever near which can lead to killing the battery. I didn't have this issue with my 4Runner but when I saw the warning in the manual, it explained why my wife was having battery issues with her BMW as she used to keep the key in her center console since car was in the garage. Hope it's something as simple as this.

Interesting finds after an accident

So my 4 month old 2020 t-boned an Altima because the driver ran a red light. The impact was hard enough to bend the frame. The airbag did not deploy and pre-collision did nothing. So an 18k repair invoice, including a full frame replacement won't get me a replacement (working on that with lawyer). What troubles me most is that when I went to the body shop to get my belongings I took a good look at the infotainment system. This is what I found (see pictures). Three safety and drive systems faults from the factory (probably why I didn't get these fault warnings before the accident). Prior to that I noticed things like the inverter switch, and some of the other dashboard switches were not functioning. My concern is that upon researching Toyota airbags, I noticed that the current recall includes several 2020 models noting that noise and voltage irregularities may prevent deployment. As many of you multi-generation owners know, the 4Runners are usually not included with most recalls and to initiate one takes an act of god. I'm wondering if any other 2020 owners have these error codes. Its under the maintenance section.

Last time I checked mine, maybe 3-4 weeks ago, there were no reported faults or errors there. ~3200 miles on it, put into service 10/2020

2020 TRD Pro Premium here. With my headlights on auto mode, why is it that my headlights stay on indefinitely with the doors or hatch open even though I shut the engine off? The lights seem to stay on as long as a door is open.

It’s the “coming/leaving home” feature, or some equivalent - not sure what Toyota calls it. Should stay on X seconds after the door closes to allow time for you to get to your door and use your headlights to find the correct key to open.
If you want them to turnoff immediately just hit your lock button twice in quick succession after closing your door or flip your lights from auto to DRL back to auto after you shut off the engine.

My wife's JGC does this, my mom's Yukon Denali does this, my dad's GMC Sierra does this. I can even tell if they call me and it's raining outside.

I agree. I’ve had a Yukon Denali, F-150, and the 4Runner. They all sound the same and are hard to understand if you aren’t sitting still or moving very slow. Regardless they never have great sound quality. Girlfriends Subaru has the same issues. Honestly I’ve never had anyone talk to me through a vehicles hands free system that sounded decent.

1) My brakes squeak a lot especially during humid/wet days if the vehicle has been sitting for a while...

They probably can't do anything. Look at your rotors before you drive it next time. Rotors get surface rust pretty quickly and the grit will cause the squeak for a bit. Tap the brakes a few time to clean up the mess and you should be fine.

I get it even in Nor Cal if the car sits for a while. If it's raining hard it might be over night.

At 5,000 it is "scheduled maintenance" reminder - so they check fluids and rotate tires. No oil. I was irked that I dropped my car off for the day the first time to not get new oil but merely a "thumbs up, you're good!"

Recommended oil change is at 5K intervals according to the docs.

My 2011 4runner (replaced with 2020) and my wife RX350 were both 10K. What's changed?

Interesting. I talk to my dad who owns a 2020 Sierra and can’t tell he is driving for the most part. My mom has a 2020 Kia Telluride and no issues there either. I’ve had BMW loaner SUV that had no issues either. I’ve come to terms with Toyota lacking in the infotainment. The 2020 is still leaps and bounds ahead of where it was but is 3 years or so behind most manufacturers.

Sorry about the truck. I have the exact same 3 messages in my 2020 TRD. Has anyone figured out a fix?

Interesting, do you know the manufacture date of yours? Usually you can find it on the door label. I would take pictures of it so you have a record and a time stamp. Most recorded events get deleted when serviced. Do you have any other electrical quirks (Mine were dashboard buttons).
When I researched the recent Toyota airbag recall, Toyota states that voltage irregularities and spikes might cause the Airbag to fail to deploy. I suspect this may be the case in mine as the impact was hard enough to require a full frame replacement. I'm just waiting for a read on the EDR to see if the numbers justified deployment.

Vehicle was manufactured in 2/2020. No electrical faults and the VIN search shows no recalls for airbag. The errors were for Multi-Terrain Select System / Pre-Collision System / and VSC, TRAC.

The error codes were thrown on Feb 14th @3:38am but I didn't get the car until April 2020 when it came direct off the boat for a custom order. The codes had to be thrown while it was started up in Japan at the factory or something. Really weird.

Guess I will have to take her into the dealer to see what's up. It probably has the Coronas.

Good grief I hope IData comes out with a Maestro unit soon because this "infotainment" system is just terrible. The biggest issues so far:

Caution splash screen stays on too long.

Inability to lower (or control at all) the volume while the splash screen is on.

It does not store contacts - it must reload them every time I start the truck.

It almost never returns to the same screen. For example, if I push the phone button and then push the favorites button, I would expect to land on the favorites page the next time I push the phone button. Nope. It will randomly go to some other page such as the full contacts list or some other page. If I go to the radio screen and then presets, I expect to go back to presets the next time I push the radio button. Nope, it randomly will go to another page such as "radio replay" or something else. There is no rhyme or reason to it.

Bluetooth *constantly* disconnects, reconnects, disconnects as I'm driving. About every 30 seconds, so there is a constant stream of messages at the top of the screen about the connects and disconnects. Does this with multiple phones.

All firmware is up to date so I have no idea why it's behaving like this. Just terrible.

Thats BS; you need to get the dealer to fix all of that. My 2020 has none of those issues at all.

The ONLY thing mine does that I dont like: When my BLUETOOTH music connects, it turns down the volume quite a bit all by itself, then goes back to normal after a minute or two. It does this most of the time, but not everytime.

The only thing I use the “entertainment system” for is as an amplifier for my iPhone. And for the radio/XM. The Entune Bluetooth functions only semi-adequately and has reduced audio quality. I plug directly into the USB port for better audio. For navigation I use iPhone apps Waze, Google Maps, Apple Maps, etc. For phone calls and text messages say “hey Siri”. I don’t load any contacts into Entune, just use your phone.

I've suspected it's a software issue, but all the dealer did was check that the latest firmware is on the unit, pat me on the head and tell me there's nothing it can do.

I've got a fairly high end Pioneer/Alpine system from my 4th gen waiting to go in that will cure all these problems. Come on, IData!
