Sorry but a Civic Type-R isn't a sports car (great subwoofer, yes) and never will be since it is FWD.

What are your criteria for what’s considered a sports car? I’ve got an Audi RS4 and I’d run it against quite a few of the “sports” cars of its time. But do the 4-doors disqualify it?

And I’d definitely get behind the wheel of one before you dismiss it.

And top car award is not same as top sports car of the year. Btw I'm not dismissing it as a fast car or even a great fun to drive car but I do dismiss it as a sports car, mainly because it is FWD. No different than anyone here dismissing a RAV-4 off-road SUV.

My Acura TL is a FWD sedan with ~265HP. Even if it had 300 HP (like a Camry) I don't think anyone would consider it a "sports car", and doubtful even sports sedan.

This is all just my opinion, if someone wants to consider a Civic-R a sports car then they are free to do so

Wait For It

1 - I like the new design. May even look better in person
2 - I get it, real Toyota fans are always the first and harshest critics - as it should be.
3 - Understand that Toyota has more on the line here than you do. They have to follow up the LAST Supra, after all. And they have to appeal to more people than just us here.
4 - Don't compare it to cars that are not its targeted competition. Remember that Toyota CAN design and install an 800-HP V8 if they want to - heck, FCA did it. For some reason, that's not what this car is about.
5 - Give them time to show you what THEIR Supra is, and relax on wanting it to be YOUR Supra.

AWD, correct. Which is why I brought it up. Was curious if you had any other qualifiers on what you consider a sports car. Or if FWD is the main one.

And I understand that it's your opinion and you are definitely free to have whatever qualifiers you want being so. Someday I'll tell you all of my qualifiers on what I consider a sport or not (in the athletic sense).

Well I consider RWD one of the main ones as a "qualifier"and FWD (front only) as a "disqualifier" . I hope that clears things up.

I think they'll be happy to miss that target. 2018 sales for the GT-R = 538 (2017 = 578). You hardly see one on the road. Base price is somewhere around $110k. Great car or not, I think only small exotic-car companies would label 538 units as a good year. Like most automakers, Toyota isn't in the business just to prove they can impress - they're where they are because they sell vehicles. From what I've seen, the Supra will be in the $50k - $60k range (unless demand changes that). More folks can afford that, so if the Supra has wide appeal, it should sell.

When Supra sales dropped off to around 1200 annually in the late 90s (more than the past 2 years combined for the GT-R), they turned it off.

The Supra launch edition is within a few hundred dollars of the corvette stingray with less hp/ torque than it’s bmw counterpart. Hmmm.

The twin scroll turbo in the bmw is really nice, makes full torque around 1200 rpm.

My 135i has the n55 motor, which is the previous generation motor, it is a blast to drive.

And that's the point! Go big or go home. Come out big to impress and build excitement...like the Dodge Hellcat, Ford Raptor...even the WRX when it first came out way back when.

Just like the Acura NSX...great car...but just didn't generate the buzz or excitement that it should have...sales are suffering.

Design looks as for the masses not the enthusiast that remembers the last gen.
HP to weight ratio - ok, 9#'s/hp or less better, didn't see front to rear weight distibution- two things that make a sportscar to me.
