The Army green looks pretty good in those pictures but the pics aren't that accurate. There is an army green FJ that I see driving around near me and it looks bad. I don't know if the PRO will ever hit the sweet spot for me. I loved Inferno, Cement and Cavalry blue but a sunroof is a must have for me. They finally added the sunroof but I don't think I could live with the Voodoo blue and I really hate the new roof rack. Oh well.

I don't think any of us expected any different, but I spoke to a Toyota Product Specialist today who said the powertrain is a complete carryover for 2020 - no 6AT or 8AT as some hoped.

Sad :( I know it's what we all suspected. How trustworthy is the source? Also, did you happen to catch the time frame when the first ones are expected to ship out?

Unfortunately, very reputable. This PS was here looking at a squeaking noise my dealer can't fix in the front end of my 4R, and we talked a bit about the updates. I asked if there would be any changes above and beyond what was announced for the TRD Pro and he said no.

Expect them around the end of September, beginning of October.

Squeaky noise might be where two flaps connect. I remember reading a thread in here about it and it being a fairly common issue.

Everything I’ve read puts us early 80s births at Gen-Y/millennials. We share more with millennials than gen X because of being exposed to the era of information in our formative years versus seeing it for the first time as an adult.

I'm Gen-X born in 1966 & had computer classes in 1983 in HS. Used PC's at work in 1985. We know technology LOL. I'm one who doesnt give a shit about it in my car. I like to drive, my 4runner is a manual, I'm one with the truck & the road.

Hi, since the MY 2020 will include new standard safety features could we expect a change in the different trims line up? It kind of strange that you can only get the lockable rear differential in the TRD version.

I'm same.... I was all about the Cav Blue and you don't know how hard I tried for eight months while on waitlist for mine to snipe a Canadian Cavblue with a sunroof... but wasn't meant to be because up there is even more difficult to get than down here. Regardless, lack of sunroof was only thing that bothered me at purchase because it is only thing I couldn't reasonably bring myself to "fix" without letting a autotrim shop chop a hole in my roof and hatchet my headliner for something aftermarket that would likely squeak and leak down the road a few years. But I loved the Blue so much I got it without the sunroof, and believe it or not, guess what I don't miss. I actually like the silence and extra headroom.

Just opinions, but I'm very happy with the '18 Cavblue and like you also not a fan of the Voodoo/Army tints and certainly not the new rack though all of these things seem very popular with others. As for the other new model perks, I wish I had the fox setup, I might be interested in the new 2020 head unit although my OE Audio+ setup sounds way better than the 2019 pro system with the JBL "premium" sound. I'm not really about the safety sense aside from the adaptive cruise which is cool on road trips BUT that lunchbox -looking sensor they strapped to front end in my opinion upsets the otherwise super cool aesthetic of the Pro front end. Don't know why they couldn't have more seamlessly integrated that... or added signal mirrors & puddle lights perhaps>? I digress and repeat belabored rants from earlier in the thread.

Cheers - JC

I hear ya. The Cav blue is pretty sweet and it was the last year before the big price increase. I almost did pull the trigger on one. I had a deal ready to go with a dealer on Cape Cod for MSRP of $44K. I was stuck on the sunroof as we live by the beach and drive out onto the beach all year and really love the combo of just having the sunroof and rear window open. I ended up trading my SR5 for a magnetic grey off road premium instead, for $37K. I’ve yet to see a local Cav blue driving around here either, so it would have been pretty exclusive. Glad you got yours and are enjoying it.

Is it even possible to buy a Canadian model and import it to the states without an incredible amount of hassle?

Depends on your definition of hassle. Yes it is possible and given the relative strength of our dollar to theirs, the acquisition cost differential posed in much higher Canadian destination charges and US import duties is basically washed out by the exchange rate. Also buying in AB province is a plus because even though it is more remote, AB is exempt from the general govt tax up there so you save decent bit. Also I have family in Edmonton that would have assisted the transaction so that is a head start because most Canadian dealers will only sell to citizens. There actually apparently was a directive about this from Toyota corporate in in Canada regarding the TRD Pro line through 2017 but it was released by 2018 and many Dealers don't know this and/or choose not to deviate.

That said, the Pro allocations up there are very much more restricted than in US... I carefully watched dealer inventory for six months and saw perhaps less than ten Cavblue Pros in that timeframe arrive at all dealerships in BC and AB. Of those all but two were spoken for preorders and those remaining two were gone within a day of arrival (before I could make arrangements). One of the dealers was willing to sell direct to me in BC which is just 3 hours north of where I live in Seattle area but I needed an emissions compliance letter from Toyota Canada in order to import and license it in WA. This letter is a simple request from dealer but represents extra work and while I was trying to get them to agree to that, a local customer showed up and offered more without the hassle... so too bad for me. The other available one" was in Calgary not to far from where my Uncle lives but this dealer would only sell to my uncle and in trying to work out those logistics, same thing happened with another customer showing up ready to buy.... so anything that presents extra work/uncertainty for a dealer to sell a vehicle in extremely high demand isn't something that is going to happen when they can just take someone else's money without doing that work. I could have put deposits in Canada, but you risk losing that money because until you actually get allocated the vehicle you can't get an emissions letter specific to that vehicle and I didn't want to roll the dice that much about something going sideways where I can't bring in the new $50k rig I just bought and license it in US.

In the end it was an educational experience and I was entertaining this process because the Canadian Pro config seemed more ideal to me. The Canadian TRD Pros in 2018 where exactly the same as US models in all respects except the sunroof, side mirror indicators and puddle lights, and a cluster that favors metric units. It was so weird to me that they made them this way in Canada and not here and even more so weird that when they finally put a sunroof on the 2019 US Pro, it does not have the side mirrors with indicators and neither does the 2020, Seems like the Canadian setup was how it should have been but many down here prefer no sunroof and up there they are stuck with it.

Probably TMI for most in this thread but interesting for some to know perhaps. In the end, mine is super nice and while the lack of sunroof was big apprehension for me during purchase process, I don't miss it at all. The cab is plenty open and light and then headroom actually is much more spacious and I do believe it removes additional environmental noise while driving which allows me to enjoy my thoughts (uhhm hope that makes sense).

Cheers.

Thanks for the detailed explanation. I had actually thought about trying to do what you did, with a Cavalry Blue, but gave up after researching it. Sounds like you at least had a chance with family there. I guess the best way would have been to get a family member to purchase it and then you could have given them the money. Then they could have sold it to you for $1 in a private sale.

I guess it would have held its value pretty well as it probably would have been a one of a kind with the Cavalry blue and factory sunroof.

Enjoy your rig. If they offer that color again down the line, I’ll def grab one.

I know that many of you are anti-tech, but last night I had an instance where the collision warning feature prevented what would have been an accident. My 4Runner is at the dealer right now for a front end noise, so I have a Tacoma loaner at the moment.

I was driving through a residential area going ~30 mph about 2 car lengths behind the car in front of me. This was a flat, straight stretch of road and I'd been following this car for a mile... so... pretty relaxed driving.

In my peripheral vision, I see that a tree fell on a neighbors house, so I look to my left to get a (quick) better look and all the sudden the collision warning beeping goes off, I look forward, and the car in front of me slammed on their brakes because a basketball went into the street (kids playing in a driveway and the ball got away from them).

If I did not have TSS, I would have probably rear ended that Hyundai. You can certainly say I should have been paying attention and looking forward, but I think many of us are guilty of glancing side to side, especially during a leisurely, low speed drive like that. It all happened within probably one second, and thanks to TSS, I slammed on the brakes and ended up about 6" from the bumper of the car in front of me.

I'm on the fence about upgrading from a 2016 to a 2020, but these safety features do truly have merit - even for people who consider themselves to be safe, alert drivers.

Sidenote: Every time that I've brought my 4R in for service, I've gotten a Tacoma loaner and my luck with them is 50/50. I've had a few with the famously awful transmissions that can't seem to shift out of its own way, and a few that have been flawless. This one I have right now falls into the "flawless" powertrain category and it actually makes me wish we had this engine in the 4Runner. The bad ones make me swear off that engine/tranny combo, but when it's right..... damn, it's right. This transmission is super sharp, never hunting for gears, and when you put your foot down, it would leave a 4Runner somewhere in the rearview. I just don't understand why Toyota can't seem to get more consistency out of the powertrain in these trucks. If there was a higher success rate (aka less problems), I'd be eager to get this engine in the 4Runner. Like I said: when it's right... IT'S RIGHT.

Yes, this is how I planned to do it with my uncle, but much like down here, unless you have put in a deposit with a dealer up there ahead of time you aren't getting one. Down here, I put a $500 deposit at a local dealer I found willing to sell at MSRP which would have been fully refundable if I didn't get the rig. Up there dealers wanted more like $3k minimum and none of them were willing to make the "refundable" part contingent on my being able to successfully import it to US (i.e. them getting the emission compliance letter from Toyota Canada once the rig was delivered). Plus remember up there the chances are even more scarce of getting the special color so the dealers were always trying to get me to settle for a black or white which was easier for them to get.

This is where it got too risky for me to proceed and I knew my only hope of making it happen was to snipe one that happened to show up on a dealer lot unspoken for and be ready to jump before a local got it. That was one in a million and I couldn't do it in six months of trying but believe me, I looked every day and my passport and $$$ ready. Oh well, wasn't meant to be. Meanwhile I got a perfectly fine CavBlue down here and have put lots into already to make it suited to me thank in no small part to many of the great forum people here sharing super cool ideas and offering enhancements to an already great rig. The way I look at it any 4runner is a great rig, I loved my '06 sport and the '03 had before that one and was actually very close to buying a MGM Sr5 like yours because of the sunroof and I love that color too. Truth is, the lack of sunroof has become a non-issue for me so glad I went Blue.

Cheers, JC

AAA Car Buying

Not sure how this would work in Canada, but after being jerked around by more than one dealer here in Phoenix, I looked into another option. My bud Rich had purchased a new 2019 Limited and said buying thru AAA was a great experience. I had heard thru LOTS of people on here that a TRD Pro was excluded form buying programs and I knew for a fact that the Costco program DID exclude the Pro. But, AAA Car Buying did not, got my 2019 Pro delivered to my house Tuesday night and paid sticker. I hope this helps other buyers looking for a Pro.

What did you end up paying for it through them? Is there a set price or do you negotiate with a dealer?

Like jc above said, “they are all great rigs”. Any 4Runner is an uber capable rig off road stock, I think we sometimes forget that. My reason for buying the Pro was a personal one and it had equipment on it that I would have added had I purchased an Off Road and then added it. Very pleased.
