2020 TRD Pro Enhancements

Here are the enhancements to 2020 TRD Pro. There is nothing more / nothing less. New generation is several years away -- at least (CAFE / world platform, etc.).

Everything the 2019 has plus:
-- TSS-P
-- 8 Inch Touchscreen w/ Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, Amazon / Waze
-- Smartkey / push button start
-- + 2 rear USB ports
-- New instrument panel
-- TRD Cat Back Exhaust
-- Army Green

+ Price increase.....

In Colorado for a long while you would have been lucky to have found one for less that $52K because all the ass-hat dealers were adding $5K dealer mark up to them.

Now that the 2020s are getting closer that has going away, but you'd still have a hard time finding one from less than MSRP. Most are pre-sold before they even get to the lot.

Yep, I asked one dealer about a 2020 and they want 5K over MSRP for it. Found another dealer selling a 2019 without the 5K addendum, but they sold fast.

Hyperbole much? That's your opinion, where as I believe it enhances the car and I'd love to have adaptive cruise control.

I'm not a fan of lane departure (it's wrong more than it is right when I drive), but oh man do I love radar cruise control. Being able to sit in traffic with your foot just below the gas/brake and having the car do the work for you is great.

… put another way, it maintains a preset distance between yourself and the vehicle in front of you. With regular cruise control, you set it a certain speed and that speed will be maintained but anytime a car in front you slows down you have to decelerate to keep your "space cushion" or the opposite if traffic speeds up. With adaptive cruise (another name for "radar cruise control"), you set your distance and the "radar" keeps you at that distance from the vehicle in front of you by speeding up or slowing down your rig automatically. Hope this is a decent explanation for anyone who doesn't already know what it is. This "radar" also doubles in function to prevent forward collisions by warning you abruptly and/or automatically applying the brakes if traffic suddenly decelerates/stops in front of you to keep you from "rear ending" something.

We have this on my wife's car and I'll tell you it is super nice on long freeway trips. But on her car it is nicely designed into the aesthetic of the grill (looks more like a small mortar shell or something poking out slightly), whereas on the 2020 4runner, looks like someone found a large aftermarket rectangle radar dish and slapped it smack in the middle of the otherwise beautiful TRD Pro heritage grille. Many have said it already in this thread but not very well integrated visually to the rig. As for blind spot monitoring, that is on my wife's car too and involves many little sensors being put laterally along the vehicle to know if you are about to move sideways (or backwards) into an obstruction like a vehicle in your blind spot or a pedestrian behind you. This feature usually appears with warning in the instrument cluster and more helpfully as a warning beacon light in the sideview mirror telling you not to change lanes because something is in your way. This also can sort of keep you from drifting out of a lane by assisting with steering but that feature is just annoying and doesn't work very well whereas the blind sopot monitoring can actually be helpful (again best part is the little beacon lights in the side mirrors). Unless they loaded the 2020 runner with these lateral sensors I doubt its on there.... also the mirrors look no different than previous years so I doubt that mirror beacon is added otherwise WHY DIDN'T THEY PUT MIRROR BLINKERS AND PUDDLE LIGHTS ON IT FOR CRYING OUT LOUD?

When I was shopping for my 2019 TRD Pro, I would always ask the salesmen why all the other Toyota models had Safety Sense (beacon light in side mirrors) except for 4Runners. Got a lot of different answers which was frustrating. One salesman claimed that because 4Runners are often modified, the sensors would need to be recalibrated (which is expensive) so from the manufacturer viewpoint why bother including this option at all? I don't really buy that explanation but regardless it is a mystery why Toyota still hasn't added this feature to the 5th Gen 4Runners.

It uses a radar mounted in the front bumper to actively monitor the distance and speed of the vehicle in front of you. In my vehicle, it does a surprisingly good job of maintaining a set distance (3 different distance settings) between me and the vehicle in front of me. It can handle curvy roads, uphill, downhill, and apply the brakes/gas as needed to maintain the distance.

It will bring the vehicle to a full stop, but in order to get it to go again you need to tap the accelerator pedal.

I'd love future 4Runners to have this feature as it makes driving in traffic much less annoying and it's great for longer road trips.

I don’t want any of that crap in my car. I feel lucky to have purchased a 4Runner before they start integrating all that “privaledged” stuff into the car. All it means is more stuff to break and more stuff to worry about if you decide to mod your car. I like my head space with no sunroof which also means one less thing to start rattling and one less weak point for rust. My wife has push start and a fancy key fob that I really don’t enjoy messing with. Give me a key and place to put it so I can mechanically twist my wrist and get that engine fired up. I will however be excited to see if the head unit can be reverse integrated. Too bad the 2020 will not be a Matte green, has that stupid sensor plate in the grill, and has an utterly ridiculous looking rack on it :crazy: AND it going to most likely cost more than any other new 5th gen that has ever been released. No thanks Falicia! I’m sure I’ll enjoy seeing the car on the road but it’s nothing I’d be willing to put 50k+ on the table for. Let’s not get started on the deappreciation once the next true 6th gen comes out. Toyota was smart in waiting to release the last one with the army green color and adding a few worthless items to get the hype going.

It is possible though to like some new things, and not like some new things.

I love the touch screen stuff in the 4r, the stereo, maps, but would hate having a touch screen climate control, I like the knobs, always will. That does not me anti-tech, just demonstrating my preferences.

As I said before though, I think some people should have gotten a Highlander, not a 4runner. Highlanders are great, my mom has one, and it does 100% of what a lot of people use their 4r for, and has all the little tech gimmicks they complain about the 4r not having.

Don't be mad that you have to drop 50k+ for a car that some do not desire. However, its your own fault. We can all agree that the 4Runner does not need any tech upgrades in the TRD PRO trim level. Maybe the Limited perhaps. However, the TRD PRO line is geared toward something completely different. If you want all your luxuries then go elsewhere. The res of us rather keep it simple and keep the price reasonable.

Agree - all the additional (and arguably unnecessary) spec, gadgetry and safety equipment drive the price too high unless you want to pay way more money. The 6th generation will likely be a similar update to what you saw on Tacoma (bad). Sacrifice for the sake of chasing CAFE numbers. I don't think it will have any impact on 5th generation residuals. Maybe drive them up.

It's already getting to the point where it's too expensive for what it is. In the mid high 30's this car was a steal. At 50k the value is gone.
