2020 TRD Pro Updates - Army Green & Push Button Start

Haha a dealer thought he could entice me on a 2020 TRD ORP w/ KDSS for 2k over MSRP because it's the only one with KDSS they had allocated this shipment. I have a deposit down for an Army Green TRDP for -500 MSRP, I cannot imagine what universe this sales manager is from. I'm looking to switch to a TRD ORP, yes, but I can wait until this nonsense markup blows over.

Wow, now dealers are marking up ORPs, preposterous!

After owning 6 4runner trd pros I figured I'd give my opinion. They are way too expensive now. Msrp has gone up like 7 grand in the past couple years. I bought a few trd pros for like 41,000. Finally traded in my black trd pro for a Sequoia Trd Sport (10k off msrp) Yeah the Sequoia is ancient but man this thing is a tank and I don't miss the 4runner at all. So for now my wife and i will stick with the Sequoia and my tundra trd pro voodoo blue.

Do you think it is sales all around are slowing down or sales of 2019’s are slowing down because the 2020’s are on the way with not a ton but a few nice new features like CarPlay?

August 2019 Numbers
U.S. sales for Japan’s largest automaker rose 0.2% to 209,204 cars and trucks, as higher sales of its Corolla and Camry sedans offset a dip for its best-selling RAV4 sport utility vehicle.

Deliveries for the Toyota brand advanced 0.4%, while Lexus sales fell 1.5% compared with a year ago.

April 2019 Numbers Sold YOY Estimate
Toyota 183,866 -4.4 -0.7 Miss

Sales have been less than or near to last year. The cost of cars are astronomical followed by high interest rates. Yes, Toyota is about to sell more, but only a little more than 2018.

A few random points:

- I think the 4Runner price increases, even on the Pro, are hard to stomach because this has been the same basic truck for a decade now. It got projector headlights and new bumpers, and now some software, but it’s not like we ever got a new engine, or new transmission, or a factory S/C or something. More meaningful upgrades would have made the price hikes seem more justified. You can look at that two ways: 1) sales are up, so why mess with success? Or 2) they’re greedy and taking whatever anyone is willing to pay, and clearly testing the upper limit with the Pro. I think it’s both.

- We’re heading into an election year, so that always creates some uncertainty and anxiety for consumers

- The word “recession” has been thrown around more in the last few weeks, and it’s got people alarmed

- Whether you like or dislike him, the president is chaotic and hard to predict. The first place people manifest their insecurity is their wallets. He’s also specifically talked about targeting the auto industry with tariffs.

- Back and forth dialogue about interest rates, they’re higher, but currently not bad

Lots of people are starting to or will start to hold onto jobs and money heading into 2020. That’s not great for car sales.

MGM is a cool color and first year it is an option on the pro so that might be popular, but then again it is just Gray so I wouldn't expect people lining up for it like the droves drooling  over green right now.

Good luck and enjoy!!!

Cheers,

JC

MG was offered on pro in 2016

Remember, this is for the Canadian-spec 4Runner. This is the press release on Toyota Canada's site:

The Real Truck, Ready For Anything: The Toyota 4Runner Blends Capability And Comfort, And Introduces The New Venture Edition For The 2020 Model Year | Toyota Canada

Nothing that hasn't already been shared/discovered.

I was hoping for some new 2020 photos, but came up empty. However, if you want to take a stroll down memory lane, click on the Image Gallery tab here:

"While the 2020 Toyota 4Runner Venture is the biggest update to the 4Runner line-up, every model and trim level receives new gear, too. Updates for the 2020 model year include the following as standard on all models: Toyota Safety Sense P, Connected Services by Toyota, Apple CarPlay™ and Android Auto™ compatibility, the Toyota Smart Key System with Push Button Start, dual-zone automatic air conditioning, a 4.2” full-colour multi-information display and two additional USB ports in the rear seating area."

Makes it official, it's a hit or miss for people but just thought I'd point out that now we have confirmation for the CA market on that feature.

Owned a Cement, sold it and bought a LC, going back to Army Green. I agree price hike seems a bit unreasonable and could ultimately change my mind but I’m going to wait until I see it to decide.

It's fun to watch some so happy that they can get it at full MSRP.

Toyota Marketing, you guys are be brilliant! :trophy:

These are all logical points on paper and what should occur according to pre-2000's historical behavior and college economics classes, but not what I've observed in the past 10+ years. Through all the tenuous political and financial climate starting with the market crash in 2008 and government "bailouts" leading to "recession" and the polarizing years we have had in that timeframe with the political barometer needle pegged about as far to the left then right as it can go you would think these behaviors you outline would have followed again... but they haven't (at least in the places I've been).

Malls, stores, fancy restaurants are gridlocked at all times with people in nice cars. from e-commerce shopping trends to the neighborhood Home Depot - People here in the USA still apparently have plenty of money and are still spending the shit out of it in a bubble of apparent comfort. Obviously this is generality and I'm not oblivious to the undeniable population of impoverished which I would likely spark a huge debate by submitting a large portion fits that category due to their own refusal to help themselves when our taxes do a sufficient job of it or being content to status quo as numb to anything else for failure of our healthcare system and the opioid crisis (WOW this is getting deep). I*'ll switch gears back.

Point I'm trying to make is in the face of an environment where consumer confidence should have been extremely low during most of the past decade I have witnessed the opposite. And because of this I would bet Toyota can slap a new coat paint on their same TRD Pro in 2021 while charging another $3k more and the same droves of enthusiasts drooling over the tint will race to their dealers and pay the premium (even as repeat shoppers having done the exact same the preceding 1-2 years which we see here). I myself did this last year and then have since dropped another $5k+ on trimmings for the rig. I also spend way more than I should eating out, on entertainment, recreation, toys and I just paid double what I did last year for a stupid Aruba access point because of the new tariffs (shrugged my shoulders and said whatever that sucks but bought it anyway). I behave this way because I have good job and I also am putting enough money into savings and my kids' current and future education needs. I am not rich and I can see many like me or probably both better and worse off financially doing the same. My dad never spent more than a few thousand on a car/rig when I was growing up and always fixed them up himself even making decent wage as engineer until my mom vetoed him later in life and now they drive a freakin' Audi. But those are days apparently gone by and we act differently now. The media make a ton of noise about how bad things are but apparently not loud enough for us to hear it and adjust our spending. Not sure if this is good or bad.... Probably both. :ohwell:

Cheers,

JC

Even though I don't need it considered trading my 2018 SR5 on an off road, 2020. I saw the price increase and thought they were crazy. Really glad we found the 2019 Limited color combo we have now with third row and I love my 2018. I think sales will fall with the increases or they revert down. This may give them reason to halt production in a couple years.

Where did you see the pricing? Did I miss it in this thread?

What I found was higher than that. Those prices aren't bad compared to the autoblog prices I saw.

Yeah, my dealer said he won't go under MSRP and I was trying to find out what that is. Said I can have the first one they get and he'd put in for them to receive one. No idea at all on timeline, but not in a big rush at all so that's fine with us.
