The most interesting aspect of the 2020 Tundra prototype pictured here are the brush-like elements attached to the rear and sides of the truck. Toyota wants to hide the underside of the truck, it seems, which means some major suspension changes could be in store.

I swear somewhere on this forum years ago I pondered about Toyota, or any full size truck maker, using a mild hybrid system. To me it always made sense as the weight and size of a truck off the line are well suited to an electric motor's low end immediate torque.

GM experimented with hybrid powertrains in the SUV and full size pickup range and found that there was zero gain in efficiency.

Wouldn't say zero gain, but on paper it was a jump from like 15 to 20 mpg. Basically "less shit". Highway mpg didn't really change, and with the new 10-speed a regular new Tahoe will laugh at it. Such a pre-bailout GM type of idea.

I'm interested to see how they implemented it. How big of an electric motor, how big of a battery, was it fill time assist or only in certain situations? All significant factors.

Internal combustion tends to be more efficient when cruising, but getting moving off the line the electric should be more efficient.
 

Interesting. Although it doesn't sound like the efficiency issues mentioned were real.

All this fuel-efficient technology came together to give GM's hybrids a huge bump in gas mileage. The increase was almost 30 percent, from 16 miles per gallon around town in the conventional versions to 21 mpg in the hybrid models. In fact, that bump will save more gas annually than the bump from 30 to 39 mpg that you'd see by switching from a standard Camry to a Camry Hybrid.

I'm willing to bet that fuel economy is one of the biggest complaints about the current gen Tundra. If Toyota could gain 30% that would be huge.
