Based on your signature block, you had a tundra pro before the runner. Curious how they compare. Noticable difference in power?

Monumental difference in power. Not only does the Tundra have ~30% more horsepower, it has an extra gear in the transmission so it's more frequently in the power band. The V8 sounds sweet as hell with the TRD exhaust too. That's literally the only advantage in my opinion though. Unless you really need a truck for truck stuff, an SUV is better for most use cases.

Creature comforts, ride quality, overall quality in general are miles ahead on the 4Runner. The new Tundra has better headlights but my 16 had ones crappier than the 4Runner 4R has better MPG as well but that's not saying much. My C63 gets better mileage than the 4R and has twice the power.

Yeah, SUV suits my needs way more, so I'm in the same boat. I have a 4 x 8 trailer, so the bed is pretty much wasted space. The thing I hauled most in my Tacoma was my hockey bag hahaha.

I'm averaging exactly 16mpg in mixed driving, which wouldn't be bad if I was getting good power with it, but I don't feel like the power is there based on gas consumption.

My assumption has been that the tundra power train in the 4runner would be the best, and sounds like that assumption is accurate.

Please Toyota, give us more power in the 4runner not a new list of dumb accessories !!!

I do not necessarily disagree with your statement, especially your closing comment. I do however think that the Cherokee is a substitute for the 4Runner while the Wrangler may be less so. While I believe it is now built on a car body the Cherokee line certainly represents an alternative to the 4Runner especially for those who might consider 2WD 4Runner. In any event, the entrance of the Bronco in the market will certainly impact everyone in the market space if the hype and apparent anticipation in the market extends into robust sales.

the cherokee is not an alternative as it is absolutely tiny. they wrangler unlimited is a much closer alternative. can't wait for the bronco

Honestly I don't hate it. If I was in the market for an SR5 I'd get one of these in Cement or Army Green. That being said the 6th gen 4Runner needs to come out soon and it better be a bad MF. If they aren't going to produce something that gives the same feels as a Wrangler JL then they should just can the 4R or let it go the Pathfinder route. I feel like it has an identity crisis and wants to be a soccer mom hauler and also off-roader. Just give the people what they want, V8 or TTV6, proper transmission and gear ratios, solid rear axle, locking diffs, less low hanging plastic and high clearance fenders and wheel wells so I can fit 33"-35" tires without having to chop up the damn thing. I feel like Toyota is just teasing us and making everyone more anxious the longer they drag out the 5th gens.

Yeah, I get you. I was referring to BOF vehicles, trucks - wasn't even thinking of the Cherokee, had the Wrangler in my brain. I agree that the Cherokee is probably comparable in snow and such. I'm not familiar with how it does off road.

I think he meant Grand Cherokee. I considered it before pulling the trigger on the 4runner. They are really nice, roughly the same size, and have good off road chops. but I hear many people have catostrophic transmission failures early. When I was test driving at one dealership, I saw three in the repair lot with "transmission dead, will not move" written on the windshield.

Yes. All trail editions have MTS, Crawl, and a rear locking differential. And a hood scoop. They were identical to the current TRD OR model, just a different name. All pre 2021 trail editions.

The new one still has SR5 badges too. So I don't know if they're calling it SR5 trail? Or something else.

Also, the original Trail (2010 to 2016) and now the Offroad (2017 to present) are the only trims that have KDSS available.

In my opinion, this makes the original Trail and TRD-OR trucks the most capable off the lot. Frankly, this new "Trail" along with the new "Venture" trim (wow a black spoiler and Yakima basket?) are just pointlessly diluting the brand. And yet, us idiots are chomping at the bit to get them.

Toyota is offering a limited-production run of 4Runner, Tacoma, and Tundra Trail Editions.
All of the trucks are based on the SR5 model and are offered in either rear- or all-wheel-drive models.
4000 4Runners, 7000 Tacomas, and 5000 Tundra Trail Editions will be produced.

Ah, I see that bullet point. That's an error. Since this is just a dressed up SR5, it's going to be 4x4. The article says four wheel drive properly though.

I would have bought a Jeep Rubicon Unlimited with a manual transmission if I didn't need the room the 4Runner has for a family. I've got two friends with the JK and have had no problems, but both were standard transmissions.

You are probably correct, just regular 4x4 no AWD. C&D needs to be more careful about printing such things.

Do the SR5's have a rotary knob to engage 4wd (that looks similar to Limited)? My '14 Trail has the lever. Maybe that's where the AWD/4X4 confusion comes from?
