22re. Love it or hate it?

well darn i was thinking of 86 cause i know thats when they were first in the t4r and thats all that matters:frog:

ok lets consider this the 22re first was introduced in 1986 considering that and considering the junk that was avilable in other like vehicles at the time its a great motor. the 2.5 chevy 4 banger and the 2.3 ford of the same era are junk in comparison. :thumb3::thumb3:

Around that time the Jeep Cherokee was getting the completely junk 2.8 V6. Luckily they got rid of that fairly quickly with the 4.0l. I particularly like the 4.0 straight six, regardless of the rear-main seal and oil leakage problems i hear about it.

Ive owned a few jeep 4.0s n they're good stout motors. The real problems started in 04 when they went to distributorless ignitions. The OPDA doesn't get sufficient lubrication n they seize. The cam gear gets alot of abnormal wear. If u hear the 'laughing monkey' sound ur f'd. Luckily my sons hasn't had this problem YET! But my neighbors did it after only 45k miles. The dealer hasn't been very helpful (surprise). They say to call corporate n give u some 800#. Let the fun begin!

I've heard of 01's having bad heads as well. And issues with crank position sensors.

Regardless, i still very well might own a 4.0 one day. Never driven one i didn't like.

84 2WD SR5's ONLY and celicas had the first 22re's , it was an anologue system . 85 was the first year for the 22re in the 4WD truck and 4Runner , and it was changed to a digital system

That's interesting. What does analogue mean? Was it mechanical fuel injection that was changed to EFI?
