22RE or 22R?

New on here with a few questions. Recently bought a 87 4runner as a project. It looks like the head on the 22RE in it is going to need some work. However, My brother and law has a low milage 22R that he will practically give me. Question is should I stick with fixing the RE or go for the swap with the 22R? If the swap is best, just how much work is it?

It will be a fair amount of work to swap in the 22r. You're better off with the 22re, it will have more power and better gas mileage. Either fix what you have or shop for another 22re that runs.

I second that. No reason to go backwards in engine technology.

22res and parts can be had for cheap. What does the head need?

I'll 3rd that. My 22RE is already underpowered for the highway, I would only consider a 22R if it was a dedicated trail rig.

I have a good reman. 22RE head for sale cheap if you need one. I was going to put it on my 22R then found it won't fit. I don't remember what year it's for but I'll dig it out and check if you are interested. They are pretty easy to change as long as you have the right one and a head gasket set.

Thanks for all the info. I was leaning towards fixing the 22re, but wanted a little advice from guys who have worked on these things. I will save up a few dollars a get started.
