22re starting/running problem PLEASE HELP

I took the valve cover off to adjust the valves. I had the plug on the distributer off so I could crank the engine to get the lobes in the right spot. I put it all back together, but when I tried to start it up, it wouldn't stay running. It would fire up and would run for about 2 seconds then die. The more I cranked it the less time it would run. If I let it sit for a bit it would run a bit longer, but nothing over 5 seconds.

We sprayed starter fluid in the intake and it would run off that. It seems to my like it's not getting fuel. I don't get why my fuel pump would all of the sudden go out though..

I tried 4crawler's fuel pump jumper deal (Toyota 4Runner and Pickup: Cheap Tricks)
Still wouldn't run with the jumper. I'm not 100% positive I did it right though.

Any help is greatly appreciated.. I need this thing going so I can get to work and school and I really don't want to go buy a new fuel pump and have that not be the problem

Crank it for 5 seconds or so, then immediately crack the fuel line at the gas tank side of the fuel filter - if you get spray, your fuel pump is good.

If you have no fuel pressure there, pop up the back seat and open the access hatch to the top of the gas tank - unplug the fuel pump from the electrical harness and give it 12v straight from the battery. If it whirs, it's probably good - if not, it's dead. If it tests ok, that's when you should go back and doublecheck that you bypassed the circuit open relay correctly.

These pumps can get intermittent when they're starting to die - if you have to get it running now, try banging on the gas tank right under the fuel pump, that may wake it up. Just don't expect it to stay that way.
 
Double check your vacuum hoses and distributor connections. On multiple occasions each of these items has caused me very similar problems to yours.
 
Thanks for the feedback. I'll try your fuel pump test when I get home [MENTION=49649]KidVermicious[/MENTION]. I triple checked the vacuum hoses and am pretty sure they are right. I only had to disconnect like 3. I just don't see what I could have done. All I did was unplug the center distributer plug, disconnect a couple vacuum lines, pulled off the valve cover and check clearances. I didn't even have to change any cause they were good. I put it all back together and the bastard doesn't run. This about my 5th time doing this and I've never had a problem like this.

I can't really crank it for 5 seconds because it will start right up then immediately die. So if I keep cranking it, it makes that awful starter grinding noise. Ill crank it once and pull the fuel line and see if I have pressure though.
 
Can't we disconnect the hose from the fuel pump and have it squirt into a bag as you crank it? It's not like the hose has to be attached to see if the fuel pump works when it cranks.
 
With the jumper I can hear the fuel pump working.. Checked the intake for stuck flap and leaks.. nothing.
 
So if I don't give it gas when trying to start it, it will almost come to an idle. If I give it gas it will die instantly

This all sounds exactly like how my fuel pump was acting just before it died completely. It would just almost start if I let it sit for a couple minutes first, and it would die instantly if I tried to give it gas.

Maybe it's the filter? Have you checked for fuel pressure at the rail?

No I haven't I'll go do it now. It just in such a terrible position under the intake.
 
I unplugged what I believe is the the fuel rail line and I cranked it for a good 5 seconds and nothing came out of the hose. Was this the right line?

Here is my hose set up. I'm sure you can't tell much but if you see anything wrong let me know. From diagrams I have been able to find and looking at 4crawlers hoes swap, (p1020528)
I moved a few around and eliminated the black piece that I'm holding in the 2nd picture. I don't know exactly what it is, but from 4crawler's pictures, it looks like it could be something to do with the AC (which I eliminated last winter). No matter what I do to the hoses though, it still does the same thing. It is sooooo close to coming to an idle, but if I hit the gas it does completely. I'm really hoping it's a clogged filter now.

All your high pressure fuel lines have banjo fittings. I think what you found there is an emissions line or fuel return.

The fuel line comes up the frame rail and goes to a flexible line with a banjo bolt on one side of the fuel filter, then comes off the fuel filter and ties in at the front of the injector rail. Front of the motor, between the upper and lower intake plenums.

I loosened the banjo bolt on the other side of the fuel filter and cranked it. Fuel sprayed everywhere. I don't think its clogged.... :dammit: I'm running out of ideas :shrug:
 
It idles for about 5 seconds now without touching the gas. I swear it's going to be some stupid vacuum hose that I can't see or something. That's the only thing I messed with......
 
All fuses are good. Hopefully have [MENTION=92884]snivilous[/MENTION] come over tonight with his multimeter so I can check the AFM. Not sure what else to do. Might end up taking the entire intake apart to check out the injectors, throttle body, etc...
Not looking forward to that
