231mm Tundra Brake Swap COMPLETE!

none of my friends like driving my truck because the brakes are so touchy. My pedal used to go down a bit and then all of a sudden grab. Instead they smoothly grab right from the get go.

I've been battling with the sloppy feeling pedal after the Tundra brake upgrade and I haven't found any official solution posted on line, so here is my fix to all of you dealing with a sloppy pedal after installing the larger Tundra calipers (231mm?)

I have a 2000 4runner 5spd manual, and I did the Tundra brake upgrade. The result was disappointing in the sense that my pedal travel increased, almost as if I had air in the lines, but I know I didn't. Because I used the larger 231 calipers, the stock 1" master cylinder was not sufficient. I found out that the last generation of T100 trucks, I believe 97,98 used a 1 1/16" bore master cylinder. I had to get a vacuum booster from a T100 to hook it up (because the master cylinder has 4 hose bolt pattern, instead of 2), but the result is a much firmer pedal - perfect!

I did the 231's a couple weeks ago....totally worth it. I have 33's on and it stops better than when it had the little stock tires now.

thanks for the tip!

So has anyone tried sourcing the 231's from a junkyard? I wonder...

Also, so grinding is absolutely necessary for the split-spoke 16" wheels?

Yep, this is what I did. Paid $15 each, no joke. Just finished restoring them last weekend--cleaned, rebuilt, SS speedbleeders, and hit with a coat of black G2 to keep the rust off. Going to nab new pads and rotors later this month and finish the install.

That said, I'm not sure I'd recommend it unless you've got a proper wire wheel handy. Cleaning them up with a Dremel was a long pain in the ass, and when you add in the rebuild kit, paint, grease, speedbleeders, and misc supplies, I'm probably $120 in for a pair of unwarrantied calipers. Remans aren't that much more, and certainly less hassle.

But hey, I did it because I wanted to tinker, and that's worth something. Search around on Car-Part and see if there's anything local.

Nice a fellow Denverite...

I tow a raft all summer and my rotors shake my truck like a quarter operated hotel bed.. I am dying to do this upgrade swap.

I have a 2005 4runner Limited with "downhill assist", the way I understand it there are sensors embedded in the rotor that communicate with the truck to determine the speed and the truck adjusts your decent accordingly (I could be misinformed) . if I swap out to different rotors will I lose this functionality?

Well Jake, you are in the 3rd Gen part of the forum. I'm thinking maybe your question regarding a Tundra Brake Upgrade or maybe some other type of brake upgrade for your 4th Gen would be better asked in the 4th Gen area of the forum.

Your sensors aren't in the rotor itself, most likely it's using the ABS sensors in the hub. But yeah, ask in the 4th gen section.

3rd gens have ABS sensors and the function is not affected by the TBU.

i am going to buy new wheels and while I was at it upgrade the brakes . I saw somewhere that the 231mm will fit the 16 inch five spoke without rubbing. The factory wheels will be winter tires and the ATX summer tires I am going to use the ATX AX201 for a wheel would these fit the larger 231 rotors and calipers? there is a zero offset and a 4.5 inch backspace
