231mm Tundra Brake Upgrade on 4Runner with 16" Tacoma Takeoff Rims?

Hi everyone,

I am planning a tundra brake upgrade for my 2001 4runner. The truck is currently on a set of 16" OEM take-off rims from a 2023 Tacoma, image below.

Might anyone know is the 231mm Tundra calipers will clear these? As best I can google is the truck was a 199mm caliper stock (but didn't see a clear answer), hence my fear of experimentation.

It a long shot if anyone knows, but I'd appreciate guidance!

So you planning to use the 13WL calipers which are the longer ones instead of the 13WE ( All I use) and wondering if they fix a 2023 Tacoma 16 inch rim? Man that's a good question, if it was a 17 inch rim it would probably fit. This is why I run the 13WE calipers as they fit 3rd gen stock rims. :-) If you actually compare the 13WE and the 13WL the pad surface is indentical. The longer caliper is for more air flow that is it. The 13WE even use the same brake pads as stock. I have zero issues running 13we on 2 3rd gens. I will never use 13WL personally, but that is me.

Hopefully, someone can answer that rim size question.

I know a 3rd gen sport rim 16 inch rim will fit a 2009 Sport Tacoma. I have done that in the past. :-) Just barely clears but is does.

Well, if we are talking about both calipers having the same pad surface, the WE should be just fine for me then? (I'm assuming that is the 199mm option?) Easy fix if so! I appreciate the insight

Its up to you. You can always do what you wish.

Unless your mega hauling. I really don't see the need for the 13WL As that is just redesigned longer for more air flow plus the 13WE are just wider to accept the wider rotor that is it. No need to trim the rotor dust shield either. The only reason I converted is to stop the rotor warpage. No matter what i tried nothing worked for me until i switched to 13WE and the wider rotor ( both 13WE and 13WL use the same wide rotor) The stock rotor is just too thin and the calipers just are not quite heavy enough. You may be able to non warp rotors if you put new wheel hubs in. I just gave up fighting and just went to the 13WE and never looked back. :-) I am running them on a 1997 limited and and a 1998 SR5

I did the 13WE TBU first, then years later, 13WL TBU. My conclusion is similar to brillo_76.

The pad areas may be the same, but the 13WE pads (812) are a bit shorter/wider, the 13WL pads (976) are longer/narrower. When I look at the contact wear on the rotor, the 13WE/812 utilizes the whole disk surface, while the 13WL/976 leaves about 1/8" untouched at the outer dia, and maybe (?) a little bit less contact at the inner dia.

Considering the better contact, the 100% compatible swap, and not needing to trim the dust shield... I'd definitely go with the 13WE TBU. I wish I had stuck there.

There are a few threads about it. Here's one:
