245/70 17 VS 265/65 17 - thoughts ?

Hello - new to forum. Would like to hear thoughts on going to a 245/70x17 tire from the stock 265/65x17 tire size.

I have done the math and looked at all the conversion calculators, and the effect on the speedo is a 0.10 of a MPH. The max. load and tire width are the main differences. The tread width would go from 10.7" to 9.8" - less than 1" even. The rev's per mile for both tires are 681 (for Michelins).

Has anyone converted to this tire size ? I am really asking because of the price. Tirerack has LTX AT2 for $134 in 245 series, and $193 in the 265 series - BIG difference.

Welcome... I don't think you thought process is flawed. A few people have 'downsized' a bit for a variety of reasons. If you're not going to lift maybe it's a good choice for you.

If it were me I'd consider the Revo 2 in the 245/75/17 size. It's a bit taller, has exactly the same 2337lb rating, it can be run as high as 44psi to help with mpg and controlling sidewall flex, it'd look cooler because the wheel well wouldn't look so empty and finally they're $122 each.

Thanks for the info. I am not planning on doing a lift and am seriously considering the LTX A/T2 and Revo 2's. Where did you get that $122 price from ??

If I go with 245/75's that will throw the speedo and odometer off, right ? calculator says speedo will show 2 mph slower than actually going. I was leaning towards 245/70's because the impact to speedo and odometer will be negligible ... but would consider the 245/75 if I could recalibrate speedo.

Just Changed for winter

I just did this change from the stock size of 265/65-17 to 245/70-17 for better snow performance. The taller sidewall and narrower tread gives better snow and rain performance than the lower/wider 65 ratio tire (more force per sq. in. on the tread and slightly more lateral give with the 70 ratio) The diameter difference is negligable and not noticeable. For summer I change back to stock size.

the speedo will be fine around town, its only at 50+ mph that you'll get the 2 difference, you really find it that hard to remember to go 2 mph less? i mean, instead of going 65 mph on the highway, keep it at 63. or get something like this. No difference in Diameter

I looked up the specs for my tires and the diameters for both sizes come out exact at 30.6 inches. This is just luck based on the tires I have - Dunlop Grand-Trek AT20 (265/65-17) and Goodyear Wrangler AT-S (245/70 -17).

Regarding the look - they are identical in height only slighltly narrower, about 1 inch - hardly noticable better for snow.

Thanks for the info. guys. No, I probably wouldn't recalibrate speedo for 2 mph, I was just thinking that the odometer will also be incorrect. Regardless, I ended up going with the 245/70 17's. I ended up going with Nokian Vatiiva's (based on Toyota mechanic recommendation). They have only been one the truck a week now, but so far so good.

We have gotten some snow, but nothing real dicey yet, so we will see how they work. The difference in tread width is hardly noticable to me.
