255/75 LR C or 255/80 LR E?

ive tried load road range E tires and a few other kinds on my V8 4runner and the LR E tires were by far the worst handling/driving ive had. I now run 265/70/17 Monsta Terrain Gripper tires on my fuel D583 rims. I imported them from Australia so no one else probably has these but i absolutely love them.

Added a pic of the tire.

What kind of lift/suspension do you have? Just curious if you think that influenced it at all. Thanks!

Bilstein 5100s all around toytec 112-620 springs in front and toytec Superflex in rear. I'll probably try 285 70 17 next time, I don't think I'll have any rubbing issues.

Agh good to know then. I'm going to get them from Discount so I can just return them if the ride is awful, and I never do that but if the policy is there and it's a $900 purchase...why not? Or I'll just settle on the slightly smaller KO2s in a LR C for my sanity.

I'm really confused as to why they don't make taller 265's though, like 265/80/17. I thought I finally understood tire sizing but that one confuses me.

Alright, I thought I had it narrowed down to the 255/75 KO2's in a LR C...then I started reading people's experiences with 285/70s and how you don't always need to do a body mount chop. I even saw someone with the same lift and same OEM sport wheels reporting just minor trimming was needed and he didn't even have to use spacers.

Would this hold true for off-roading though? I keep forgetting that off-road and rubbing go hand in hand and I need to size something that's still going to work off-road. Hell, I'm even considering just getting 265/70 Duratracs again since they treated me so well on my 3rd gen and I never had a problem with that size off-road. They still measure to be a 31.7" diameter, and the width is a better all around width at 265, compared to the true 32" diameter of the 255/75 KO2s.

I hate to do this, but I'm thinking of just going to Discount, getting a 285 and trying them out and returning them if they are too much to deal with.

Thoughts?

Do you have after market UCAs for more caster adjustment? That will make a big difference between needed The Chop or not.

The 285 KO2 C rated tire would be worth not getting the ST Maxx in the 255/80.

Yep, the PO put on the infamous eBay UCA's uniball knock offs, so I should be set there.

I run the 255/80/17 ST Maxx and I feel it’s an ideal size for this platform. I do feel the weight some but nothing drastic. I only took a slight hit on mpg over the 265/70/17 LR-C KO2’s I ran previously. With the 5th gen Trail Edition wheels, I didn’t need to do a BMC but I dihave to push the fender liner forward, drill new holes and trim just a little off the lower corners of the front bumper. That took care of the immediate rubbing. Found out if I stuff the front wheels hard, the tires would rub the top of the wheel wells. Some Wheelers Superbumps and Bilstein 6112’s to replace the worn 5100’s took care of that problem. In the rear when stuffing the tires they slightly rub the top of the wheel well/mud flap pieces but not enough for me to do anything about it. As for the spare tire, initially the 255 spare didn’t fit well and would contact the panhard bar. I removed the front spare tire pad and fabbed up on higher in the chassis, allowing the spare tire to fit between the rear most frame cross member and the one over the rear axle. It’s still a tight fit, I actually have to hoist the 255/80 spare into place deflated, then air up once it’s in place. It still drops down just fine. I’ll be adding a rear bumper with a spare tire mount in the future anyway. So it did take a little work to get the 255/80/17’s to fit but in the end I feel it was worth it.

As for the ST Maxx themselves, they do decent on the highway, only a little louder than the KO2’s, ride smooth, balance good, and are excellent off-road. I don’t think they are as good on wet/slick roads as the KO2’s, definitely not as good on ice but they are very good in deep snow. They did make my 4runner pull to the right, which seems to be a common problem with these tires but not everyone gets the pull. I corrected this by aggressively biasing the caster to the passenger side. Overall, if I found another good deal on them, I’d probably run them again. If not, I’ve been thinking of trying the 34/10.50/17 KO2 or the Toyo RT in a 255/80/17, both are a hair taller than the ST Maxx. I’ve also been considering jumping up to a 285/75/17 (true 34” tire) as well.

I don’t think a 285/70/17 will fit if mounted on the 4th gen wheels due to them having too much backspacing. You would have better luck trying to mount them on some 5th gen wheels that have less backspacing and even then, they’ll probably be close to the UCA and steering knuckle.

Phenomenal info! Thanks, friend! I'm guessing yours are LR E?

How much is the difference. I've looked but can't find the excact #. Just picked up some late model 17" 4th gen wheels and can't decide on the tire.

I’m not sure about numbers but I think I’ve read that different rims within the same gen vary. Like my sport edition rims aren’t the same as sr5 etc. correct me if I’m wrong though.

Both the 17” 4th gen wheels (SR5, early limited, and SE) have roughly 5.25” backspacing. The 17” 5th gen wheels have a 4.6” backspacing. So the difference is roughly 3/4”.

I picked up a set of the 6 curved spoke rims for $100 and wasn't sure if they were the 4th or 5th gen at first. But since they have 4.6" backspacing I am GTG.
Thanks for the good news.

Sounds like the ones that came on the 2010-13 SR5 models. That should look nice!

Ah, I don't think those are quite aggressive enough for out here though. Maybe I'm wrong? I was thinking tires along the lines of KO2, ST Maxx, and Duratracs.

My AT3s haven't ever skipped a beat on any of the trails I've done here in CO. Not the most aggressive looking, but for a mix of highway and moderate trails, I'll definitely be getting another set.
