255/80/17 ST Maxx users

I have 255/80s on my 2014 trail W KDSS. I installed them 100% stock and I did have to convince discount to just install and not worry about fit. I removed my front mudflaps and moved the front inner fender liner forward. I now have TRD bilstein on all 4 corners. Wheel regularly and no rubbing at all front or rear.

interesting. Stock wheels? Did you perform the modifications after you had the tires installed? If so, did you have any rubbing before performing the mods?

I'm having 255/75 Maxx Sts installed today. Came very close to the 80s, but decided based on the c-rating and 8-10lbs less weight per tire. From what i read, the 80s would fit on stock suspension with stock trail wheels.

I've been reading all the post on the 255/80/17 it seems that most people report rubbing are running aftermarket wheels. It also sounds like TE work the best with them. I could be wrong but that's the impression I'm getting. I'm planning on getting a set for my TE wheels when I get back in April so I'll be testing my theory out and post the results.

I had 255/80 installed on some SCS SR8 wheels last week. Stock height. Already had mud flaps removed. Moved fender liner forward and trimmed the bottom inside corner of the front bumper. No rubbing anymore, especially nothing major.

interesting. Stock wheels? YES Stock TE wheels. Did you perform the modifications after you had the tires installed? Drove it 100% stock with the 80s for a month. If so, did you have any rubbing before performing the mods? I moved the liner forward after the first wheeling trip only slight rub on the front at full stuff and turn. So yes some rub, but nothing daily driving.

The weights for many of the tires cooper lists are screwed up. Many have reported the 80s weigh closer to 58-60lbs each, the 75 are closer to the 50lb mark.


I had the 75s installed yesterday. Very close in height to stock size, so i'd say anyone looking for an actually taller tire to go with the 80s. 75s are a good alternative to the stock tires in a more rugged, AT tire.

Good looking 4runner! I was also thinking of getting some SR8's and possibly some 255's for my 5th gen. I run the 255/80 ST Maxx on my 4th gen on TE wheels and they are great, especially off-road. With the SR8's do you find the 255's a little too narrow or do they seem wide enough. I'm looking to go to a 33"ish tall tire but I'm not sure I want the width of a 285 but with a 8.5" wide wheel, that's at the far end for a 255.

I do know that the 255 ST Maxx are as wide as the 265/70 KO2's that were on before them and they're just a little wider than the 265/70 Hankook's before that.

Balancing issues?

Hey fellas,

I opted for the 285s here and got a good deal at NTB on them. Issue is they took 3 hrs to install and the tech was like he came out of surgery after putting them on stating"I did the best I could but one of the tires needed 2 lbs of weights to balance them and had to do them all static..."

Anyone have balancing issues?

My experience thus far is not good and am going back tomorrow to see what to do. I'm guessing warranty or something with 2 LB!!!! sounds like a bad mold or something.

Not to mention, received a nice gash in my wheel too!!!

With the SR8's do you find the 255's a little too narrow or do they seem wide enough. I'm looking to go to a 33"ish tall tire but I'm not sure I want the width of a 285 but with a 8.5" wide wheel, that's at the far end for a 255.

I do know that the 255 ST Maxx are as wide as the 265/70 KO2's that were on before them and they're just a little wider than the 265/70 Hankook's before that.

I find them to be plenty wide! Although I am only used to the stock HT tires, these are a solid bit wider than those. But I think it is all about what kind of terrain you are primarily on. My travels will be mostly on rock or other hard pack surfaces, maybe seeing water/mud on occasion. If youre on loose/soft ground you may want to go wider.

Highway speeds

How have you found the handling of these tires on the highway? I'm considering putting these on my 16' Limited after a 3" OME lift and i'm trying to decide between these and 285/70/17 KO2's. Are you confident to drive these at 90mph on the hwy?

85 mph in my RWD SR5 seems fine. I’d imagine 90 with fulltime would be just as good or better.

We drove from Phoenix to Austin and they ran fine at 80+; gas mileage was around 17mpg.

Great tire! Will be getting these again when the time comes.

Im planning on getting 255/80r17 st maxx's. Im curious what pressure guys are running for everyday road use? I read that bilstiens make a difference with running stiffer tire... I currently have about a two inch lift in the front with bilstiens but stock rear. Im planning on redoing suspension all around in the near future. As for rubbing, I'm thinking should be ok since the front is lifted around 2". Any info or suggestions is appreciated. Thanks

I'm running them in 285/70/17 at about 38lbs. I do get some pulling to the right that an alignment can't seem to totally eliminate and have heard it may be from the ST MAXX's just as a heads up.

Ran into the same 'pulling to the right' issue. Tried two sets of tires, verified alignment (two different shops) and balance, then finally settled on Ridge Grapplers.

I'm running them in 285/70/17 at about 38lbs. I do get some pulling to the right that an alignment can't seem to totally eliminate and have heard it may be from the ST MAXX's just as a heads up.

It's the directional design of the tire that makes it pull right. Some are ok with it, others aren't. Alignment can help, or solve the problem. But not in all cases.

With that suspension setup you will be fine. You may have to do the things I mentioned that I had to do, but you will just have to wait and see. If any modifications are needed they will be very minor.
