255/85/16 or 285/75/16

haha I would suggest bringing this topic up on Pirate4x4. Yeah thats it they will steer you in the right direction. =)

yeah i don't know for a fact he's not going to wheel, it just seems like that since he's caught up on larger tires instead of the other basic things that are needed......

you know what i'm sying most of us here build from teh ground up, getting a lift, diff drops, shocks and other things to accommodate the tires we NEED as opposed to just slamming the tires we WANT straight away with no regards to how they'll perform.... you see what i'm saying here.

Yes, I agree. And the people in these threads that tr4505 posted up are not saying how these tires are actually performing w/o lifts a week or 2 later, it's mostly just initial impressions. And almost all of them are still running some kind of lift and I'm sure had to pound the hell out of their fenders and pinch welds.

But, the question is, how much testing have they really done? What you get are a lot of excited people that have themselves all convinced that they made the right choice because it looks so new and so cool and they say everything is great and no rubbing. I call "Bullshit".

I even posted (#2 on your 2nd link) on one of those threads and I said the same thing as I am saying now, in the real world you will rub. Take it from guys who have been building their trucks for years and have tried (and failed at) this stuff.

I will say that you can go with a smaller lift if you run 255s than if you run 285s, but either way you are going to rub at least a little unless you run a min. 3" of lift. rtgt4r and I are getting body lifts right now because of rubbing issues and I already have a 3" coil spring lift.

hell i've test fitted 315 and they work can i drive with them probably in a straight line anything else, absolutely the hell not. Its up to you, those of us that are chiming in on the issue, all are avid off roading enthusiasts and speak from experience.

couldn't have said it better myself.

I am not trying to fight or anything just trying to point out correct information. It is not as hard as you make it seem. It may not be good for off roading but I don't know if he is going to wheel anyways.
That guy with the 34's seems to have some pretty good room for flex (as much as I had stock with 265/75/16s) btw, but he has a sketchy homemade body lift that we don't know specific details about.
If it was me I would go with a proper lift with good flex with good tires. Tires are a huge part. My prother has 33x12.50 15 with a 3in lift on his tacoma and I probably flexed as much stock with 265s before he started rubbing pretty bad because he insists on getting 12.5in wide tires. I might consider those 255's too. They give you a little more clearance and people say they rub less.
Also Pikeman is one of the more avid wheelers and vocal guy than many on here and if he is considering the 255s they probably are a good size.

I had my 285/70/17's installed with only 2.5" coil spacers and it rubbed on turns, entering parking lots, even over bumps.

You don't have to be wheeling for it to rub.

I'm just gonna stop trying, install the tires, you guys'll learn real fast what we're all talking about.
Have fun pounding your truck up, I fit 33's (and plan on 35's)without any cutting or pounding because I built my truck right.

Just stating 255s can be done without too much hassle and obviously for some people with some rubbing that is bearable. If thats what they choose to do.

Some people would be asking why you would be putting tires like that on your 4Runner if they rub that easily if you plan to wheel hard

255's are a great size nobody is disputing the facts of a great offroad/overland tire. I wish I had em maybe on my next set. =)

Also, I've met Pikeman and seen his truck 1st hand and I can tell you that he's in the 3.5-4" range on his lift (about an inch higher than I am). That's the only reason he's thinking about 255s. I don't mean to speak for you Michael, but i'm sure you'd agree.

And t4r505, we definitely aren't trying to fight over this, this is actually a very respectful forum and is a lot less harsh than most (like Pirate4x4 like rdgt4r mentioned). You can believe whoever you wish, no skin off our backs, and no hard feelings. But, I will argue a point if I know it's valid. It's the future readers that suffer by spending $$ on tires and then being disappointed when they don't function like they thought they would.

Oh my bad rgdt4r I thought you were talking generally to everyone when you said you wouldn't want an aspect ratio higher that 70-75. I see you were just referring to the OP and a stock setup.
brian2sun I was just making sure, I wasn't intending to be an ass and we can agree to disagree I guess I too only seem to argue when I believe something is the truth. But I dont really think a higher than average lift is really necessary to pull off 255's effectively

Naw, I kinda wish i got the 255 85's but 285's will do for now. Yeah i was talkin stock set up. Okay this thread is DEAD. = )

If you're not gonna wheel, why are we even discussing lifts and oversize tires?

is all this directed to me?

I do wheel
My truck is lifted 3" suspension [plus 2" bl soon], last owner had 35's
You guys are taking offense to a simple tire question, i didnt ask if i would rub or not..

Lets see it! it would be cool to see the 35's. Its all good man, no worries, we dont get all hot and bothered......atleast for long. =)

So am I not the only one sensing the hostility? I wheel without a lift, albeit moderate trails, and don't talk down to people who ask questions.

35's are off, he also had the worlds largest body lift on there which is also off.
