255 or 285?

Guys, my 265/75/16 have served me well but i think it is time for an upgrade. Rig has advanced since my 265/75 purchase. Icon, supercharger ect so now the tires are ready for the next stage. Im torn on the 255/85 or 285/75 on the 16 rim. I would like to keep preformace and mpg in check (255 works here) but 285s seem more plentiful. I would also love a D or even C weight tire. Any D or C weight tires in those two sizes? I will probably purchase when discount has the ebay sell and might pair them up with some S5 rims.

I have Maxxis 255/85 r16 MT 762 Bighorns and I love them. Load range D. Very smooth and very quiet especially considering the aggressive mud tread. I bought mine from Maxxis through Amazon. I highly recommend them. I have pics in my build.

You're not giving the OP much info here. Revo II's? H/T's? A/T's? 70 or 75? 16" or 17"? Load Range?

I'm on 17's so I'm not sure my Hankook Dynapro MT's come in the sizes you are looking for but they are awesome, cheap & load range D from Discount Tire Direct.

Chasing a ghost I'm afraid. Options are virtually non existent for a 255 that is a C or D load range.

Go with 255s, great all around tire and they don't chew into your MPGs (as much).
Unless you are serious rock crawling or mainly playing in dunes, 255s will get you through anything. The difference really comes down to aethestics and what you are going for.

I have 255/85/R16s that have probably around 15k on them and they have been quite and comfortable with the right amount of air pressure.

I agree, I have BFG KM2 255/85/16 and I get about the same mileage. Average around 15 maybe. I am charged and heavy, it felt like my milage dropped quite a bit when I added the tires, and I drive conservatively. I can feel the truck not quite in the power band and feels a tad bit sluggish. What do you expect when you add bigger tires and you don't regear. New gears going in on tuesday.

I am running 285's on my supercharged 4runner. Not sure the exact mpg yet. Still on my first fill up. I was getting about 280-300 a tank pre lift and bigger tires. I will say what a huge power difference between a supercharged and non supercharged 4runner with bigger tires. I feel like I can actually pass people on the highway now without holding the pedal to the floor.

255 are better in almost every way for on road and off road but they're more expensive and harder to find

What do you need the tires for? Since you posted this question, you care about more then just looks. So what terrain do you play in? I prefer the mountains trails, so I don't NEED the wider tire. If I ran the beach a lot or mud, then I would go with the wider tire.

I've gotten quite a few good comments on my 255 Toyo tires. Many people will go with the wide tire for looks and they never see anything but pavement.

Yes, mine are E raided, but they run great. I've got no complaints, they haven't failed me and no flats. After 3 years I have about 1/2" tread left.

Side note, I would love to know how those new Nitto Tires turn out. The Ridge Grappler.

Yeah my bad. I have the Bridgestone Dueler A/T REVO 2 Tire LT 285/75/16 with 10 Ply, load range E.

I am extremely happy with them and since I am mostly highway, I find these very quiet.

No BS. In my case I drive 75% highway (60-65mph). In my logs, the highest was 21.3. In the past when I have done 100% city, logs books are showing 16-17.

And I still call BS. You beating toyota highway rating with mixed driving. These numbers from Toyota where usually exaggerated.

That is a great article. I have read it before but thanks for reposting it. I also love those toyo tires but they are very heavy even in the 255 form. Still they are on the top of my tire list. Trails around here are mountains and sand. But i dont play in sand at all.

They are a bit heavier... But I see you've got an E-Locker as well so that gives you 4.30 gears? That and your SC, you would be fine! I have them with 4.30 gears and no SC and yes I'm a bit weak up in the mountains maintaining speeds, but it's not a game changer.

I have 285s and really like them , thought about getting the 255s but the rigs I saw with them on looked too skinny .
As for someone saying the 255 perform better almost every way on and off road is crazy ! Maybe in loose mud with hard bottom or for on road less drag but other than that , more rubber (wider tire ) touching the ground = more traction .

As for 20 mpg I call bs too , the only time I got close to that was driving from Ohio to NY over night with no traffic and cruise set at 60 mph for 10 hours when I was bone stock .
Lifted with 285s n front bumper , 15 mpg is a blessing !
