255 or 285?

No BS. In my case I drive 75% highway (60-65mph). In my logs, the highest was 21.3. In the past when I have done 100% city, logs books are showing 16-17.

The highest what, average? How are you getting 21.3? Is that over a tank or you hit that for a few miles on a trip? 285 and over 20 mpg doesn't make any sense. Stock gearing 4.10, 4.30?

255 all the way. I know it's a 4th gen, but these are 255/80/17s... which are the exact same height and width as a 255/85/16

Perfect in every aspect of all around off roading

What do you need the tires for? Since you posted this question, you care about more then just looks. So what terrain do you play in? I prefer the mountains trails, so I don't NEED the wider tire. If I ran the beach a lot or mud, then I would go with the wider tire.

I've gotten quite a few good comments on my 255 Toyo tires. Many people will go with the wide tire for looks and they never see anything but pavement.

Also, review this. It comes up every year or so, good info and diagrams:
Expeditions West: Tire Selection for Expedition Travel

Yes, mine are E raided, but they run great. I've got no complaints, they haven't failed me and no flats. After 3 years I have about 1/2" tread left.

Side note, I would love to know how those new Nitto Tires turn out. The Ridge Grappler.

I agree, this article is very informative, and quite possibly the reason why I'm getting 255's when its time to replace my tires.

Oh and maybe the OP needs to see what tires came stock on his rig, just might be the reason why his mileage is so far off

I have 285s and really like them , thought about getting the 255s but the rigs I saw with them on looked too skinny .
As for someone saying the 255 perform better almost every way on and off road is crazy ! Maybe in loose mud with hard bottom or for on road less drag but other than that , more rubber (wider tire ) touching the ground = more traction .

As for 20 mpg I call bs too , the only time I got close to that was driving from Ohio to NY over night with no traffic and cruise set at 60 mph for 10 hours when I was bone stock .
Lifted with 285s n front bumper , 15 mpg is a blessing !

Especially with 285/75/16.

The point of what I said is proven in the article: air down lower to allow the tire to better conform to the surface. Doesn't sound too crazy to me.

And, while 20 mpg on 33s seems untouchable ( and it may be because I never really go over 40) keep in mind the driving conditions: the fuel used (better fuel in different geographical locations), wind, uphill/downhill, and what type of driving was encountered (freeway or traffic). To say an AVERAGE of 20 mpg.. Well that's probably not the case. But if you drove 40 miles to a location with no traffic and accounted for the extra 3 miles per 30 miles traveled (due to the tire size difference) then that one trip may very well be 20 mpg. I promise you're not "averaging" that on a 184 hp engine with 4.1-4.3 gears though.

I drove last night on parkway. Average speed was 70mph. Drove for an hour. Scangauge was showing me 15mpg.

Not surprising. On my last vehicle just the weight and drag resistance of the 33s from 31s lost me 3 mpg

What kind of mud do you usually run through? Is it the shallow kind you want to cut through to find a hard bottom, or deeper stuff you want to float on? The difference between the two sizes may not make a huge difference, but it's a factor to consider, I suppose.

OP,
I have a set of 285's Cooper ST Maxx I purchased through one of the Discount Tire ebay sales....got a great deal on the tires, $200 off the set but.......I was planning on and should have stuck to getting the 255 ST Maxx's I wanted. Why one might ask....well for starters Discount Tire online would not/could not get me the 255's....I called and it was not going to happen. They claimed Cooper discontinued them.....even after I pointed out they are currently on Coopers site.
Soo.....long story short....I've spent much more than the money I saved in getting the sale just to get the 285's to not rub when I turn.
Yes I was already lifted 3in suspension....and had 1.25 spidertrax....that I'd rather not run.
Now a 1.5in BL and a set of SPC UCA's later and I may clear.....should clear...but I wish I would have just got the 255's and been done.
Running stock 16in Toy 5 star's....to me the best looking wheel ever. :becky: but a bit wider wheel may have helped.
With 4:30's and SCed no worries there with either tire.

Oh....and trying to find a decent way to cover the gaps left by the BL I didn't want to install in the first place....:mad2:

Get the 255's ....Pizza Cutters Rule! :dancin:
