I've ran both and couldn't tell a difference other than aesthetics. KM2's in 285 and 255 flavors(not on my 4th gen though) and they handled rocks and mud and sand pretty much the same. I preferred the 255's though cuz they were easier to get wheel spin and clean out the tread, plus they fit in my spare tire carrier and cleared the hitch.

One thing that the OP doesn't account for is that without beadlocks, a wider tire on a narrower rim is a lot more likely to hold a bead when aired down. Putting a tire that is skinnier than the factory tires and airing down below 15psi is a good way to get a flat.

Yeah most people choose 285, I did. You know why? Its a common size and its cheaper. You can find any tire you want in a 285, not many make 255s. It is a well proportioned tire for these trucks, 255s look re****ed on 4runners. Yeah, 285s look a lot better and you're a damn liar if you say you have never cared about your truck's appearance.

The offroad advantage of 255's is blown out of proportion, driver skill is far more critical and has more of an effect. I have wheeled with lots of guys with 255s and I did better than them most of the time.

The one and only advantage I see is the increased fuel economy, and seeing as I easily get 19+ consistently as it is, I don't see that as much of an advantage either.

Hey!!! My junk has 255's and they are not ugly once I put 1.5" wheel spacers on:flipoff:. My 4runner is ugly as hell though:repuke:

Ahh man; F ME! Due to the OP's "opinion"...I suddenly "feel" compelled to dump my 285's and have an immediate "need" to get something else because it was stated as a fact to be better. Now if I GAFF what anyone else thought I would also take offense at this statement but I don't.
I personally like my 255's and think they look every bit as good as any other size, plus they fit my needs for use better.
Mostly road driving, bit of dirt, rocks, rainy wet conditions and some light snow.

Me thinks everyone needs to calm down and not get so bent about something so trivial.

I ran with BFG mud terrains in 33x9.5x15 (thats 241mm width) for many years on my Patrol before they discontinued that size. They were awesome on anything dry, but struggled in the mud.
