255s?

If you are going to be running 17s I would look for some 255/75/17 bfg muds off the jeeps. You can usually find a set of 5 for cheap cause everyone takes them off so they can lift their jeep. I think they are like a 32" tire. I am going to pick up a set of them here soon when I find a set of 4th gen sport wheels

I've never heard that 255s get better mileage/life than 285s. If anything 255s have more lbs per square inch on their surface which would suggest to me that they would wear faster - less surface area with the same amount of weight. I really think it comes down to tire brand and rubber compound more than anything though. Rubbing issues are about the same with 255s and 285s. you'll need to do some fender trimming either way if you off road. In my experience, my 255s rub just a little bit more than my previous 285s did so I had to cut and pound a little bit more when I got the 255s.

Brian do you or anyone for that matter have some good pics of those 255's on your rig? I wana see how skinny they look.

Arg!! Can't wait to get mine on!

Hey Brian or anyone else who can help,

I've been looking around and can't seem to find what I'm looking for...
How much pounding/trimming did you have to do to avoid rubbing with the 255s?

I won't be running a BL just quite yet. So I'm assuming I'll have to do a little bit more than you had to do. But from what it looks like I'll have to remove the map flaps and maybe trim the front bumper some... does this seem about right?

What exactly am I going to have to beat to get these not to rub?

It seems that every runner is slightly different as well as tire brands vary and wheel BS makes a big difference too, but you'll probably have to beat the pinch weld flat on the firewall (behind the plastic liner) and probably trim the front fender skirt. My 1" wheel spacers made it so I had to trim and beat more but it was worth it for me to get a better COG. I don't run sway bars so I have a little more upwards travel and had to pound more because of that. It's really hard to say exactly, it's one of those things you just have to see where it rubs on yours and modify.

Cool man, thanks. I was thinking somewhere along those lines. If its too much work just might have to get a BL. O well!

Tirerack doesnt have every tire, but the ones they do sell they have the actual specs. As far as 255/85's go they only have the BFG, but as you can see they show they actual measurments for for all the different sizes under the specs tab.

BFGoodrich Mud-Terrain T/A KM2

Here is their 285/75/16 collection. As you can see each tire manuf differs slightly in actual measurments.
