265/75/16 or 285/75/16???

I just ordered a 3" lift kit today for my 97 4runner Limited. and I am wondering what size tire I can truly run. Ive seen mixed reviews on here in regards to what tire works best and looks best? 285's or 265's??? Also I want to use my stock rims and I noticed that alot of the 285/75/16 are rated for min 7.5" rims and the stocks are only 7".

If you do a google search for the terms 3rd, 4Runner, and 285 or 255 you will find all sorts of info on this topic. There are plenty of pictures of each. I know there are some guys running 285s on the stock rims, but I don't know that it's optimal - particularly if you ever need to air-down.
 
With 3" lift Im running 285's on stock rims and previously i was running 265's but i found with the 265's and a 3" it looked too out of place/ I put the 285's on and they fit great absolutly zero rubbing. only thing is I went with a 1.25" wheel spacers but even with them on I have nothing bad to say, love how good they fit. If I were you id go with a 285/75!

It all depends on what you're doing.

If you're more of a DD/highway driving/mall crawling, go with the 265s. They won't hurt your gas as bad, and they still look decent.

If you do a lot of trail riding, mud, stuff like that, go with the 285s.

If you want something that good all around, go with the 255/85. They're known as pizza cutters, but the thin profile makes them not suck so much gas.

I plan on keeping both the 265 and the 37s. The 265s will be for long trips, the 37s don't it the bill for gas or comfort.

Also, I'll need the 265s to pass inspection.
